Sorry for reviving a zombie thread, but I custom ordered a basket weave based on the original post (sent those pictures).
Diamond series Tekin from meerschaumstore. Will be interesting to see if the detail comes close to this beauty.

I was chatting online with the person from meerschaumstore in Turkey, and they didn't have anything similar listed on their website. I wasn't going to place an order until I was sure they knew exactly what I was looking for.
They didn't seem to have a problem with it, but feel free to be offended.

I personally always find it in poor taste to use a picture of someone's work to ask someone else to do the same, for both parties.
Once it is public domain, it's irrelevant. Besides, I don't know how many carvers could really replicate that basket weave and do it well while doing it for substantially less money.

+1 … I'd certainly like to see Tekin's version.

I agree the workmanship is amazing, but you couldn't gift this pipe to me... unless I was allowed to sell it on. My PAD remains dormant with this one.

I don't see the problem in asking a carver for a pipe shape or idea that you are interested in. That is not poor taste at all, in my opinion. In fact, I find it completely normal. If you want a basket weave pipe, it's perfectly logical to show an example of the type of basket weave you find attractive.
There are a number of different styles to choose from.
Pipe shapes and designs are constantly repeated among carvers. The basket weave is nothing new.
I would support whatever carver/artist I choose and not feel the slightest bit of awkwardness about that choice. Giving an artist an aid so they know what you are interested in when you commission a pipe is plain common sense.
Unless your bent is that you like a surprise. But not everyone likes a surprise. Sometimes people like a particular thing. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree with that stance generally, I guess that I do not know enough about meer shapes to have made my comment without further clarification. Based on the OP referring to this as a Baki Basketweave, I was was under the impression that this particular look was a bit of a signature from Baki. When a particular carver has a signature shape or look, I personally find it in poor taste to ask another carver to replicate that look. And I know a number of carvers who will say no to such a request because they feel the same way. I don't expect everyone to agree, but I am happy to state my opinion on the matter. In this case, I don't know if this is really a signature look or not, but drew my conclusion perhaps preemptively.

My only point was that I don't know why you would not go to the original maker.
I'll reply to this because it might be of general interest to the community.
I saw this pipe on Deniz Ural's site, and fell in love with it. Best Meerschaums

I noticed all the Baki pipes on the page were SOLD and hadn't been updated in a while, so I contacted Mr Ural.
He replied...

Unfortunately, after 17 years of having an exclusivity agreement with Baki

and promoting his name world-wide, Baki decided to supply his pipes to a Chinese

company and I am unable to predict if his position will change.

I located the Chinese vendor on AliExpress. That website is atrocious, and I would be highly skeptical about ordering there.

ormazd, completely regardless of whether we agree or not on the basic idea, I have to say that is a darned good reason not to go to the original maker. It is a shame to hear that he is yet another maker selling exclusively to the Chinese now. This is becoming a problem.

@ormazd: Thanks for the info. I had been thinking about emailing Deniz to inquire about Baki status. I'm disappointed to learn what happened.
I tried searching on AliExpress as you mentioned but I wasn't able to find anything.

I always thought AliExpress was one of those sites similar to DXtreme - the kind of place that people go to buy £2 watches and £4 'Zippos'. Never thought I'd see pipes of that price on there.
But maybe I'm missing the point.

I thought I would update this thread to say I am still waiting to receive the pipe I ordered from meerschaumstore in January.
