It all depends on who you ask. Asking the majority of people these days, I think, you will get unpleasant remarks if you truly dig for an answer.
Nonsmokers seldom like the smell of smoke, unless it is a fresh aromatic like Phillip has described. Come back in an hour or two and they may have a different perception...
On the rare occasions when I smoke in the house, particularly burley, I get remarks from my significant other stating that it smells like I've been smoking in there for a hundred years. Very negative feedback.
I personally enjoy the lingering scent of tobacco on my hands, hair, or clothes, especially straight Virginias or those with a light casing like licorice. A beautiful sweet mustiness that mostly only fellow pipe smokers could appreciate.
I find that a lot of cigarette smokers don't even like the taste or smell of tobacco; most of the light blends out there are tasteless and just leave a generically acrid room note.
Pipe smoke is more distinctive and stronger but it can be unpleasant depending upon your perspective.
(If you smoke English all day, most people, even pipe aficionados, may not love the lingering smell)
