I started with 1-Q and that is where I have stayed. I am considering something different. I love a nice mudoro cigar and I think I could find more satisfaction with some additions to the rotation. I guess I have to add different tobaccos to have a rotation.

I could see the shop owner cringe when I was a brand new pipe smoker, spent a while looking at his pipes and then said I wanted to try out some aromatics, but he quickly saved face. He was a kind soul and tried to sell me his cheap store blends (probabley laughing inside knowing how bad they were), however he also showed me his favorite English tobacco as well, which I also purchased. I ended up throwing everything away (all four aromatics) except for that wonderful Scotland Yard he gave me. Since then I have moved on to better tobaccos and rediscovered aromatics with Boswells (yes, aromatics I don't have to throw away). I thought it was a funny story, it's not a knock vs any kind (except mabey those super cheap store blend aromatics). They smell wonderful and taste like rancid rice.

"first real tobacco i ever had was PA, filched from my grandpa's stash--he had passed away earlier and i figured

he wouldn't mind if i used a bit of it--i didn't try an ARO until ten or fifteen years later--"
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I've always considered PA an aromatic (it's been years, maybe DECADES since I've smoked it).
Or am I mistaken?

Back in 1980 I started with a house blend, that was basically 1-Q re-named. I then tried BCA (they called it Midnight at the B&M). My first venture into English was probably Dunhill EMP and 965.

First Aro was Blue Note and I liked it very much. Still do.
First English was Dunhill EMP. Didn't care for it then, but I should revisit it.
First English blend I liked was Shortcut to Mushrooms by Just For Him.

I never tried an aromatic until recently and it was different Boswell blends. I honestly cannot remember the first tobacco I tried back in 2000. I do know I smoked mainly English blends in the beginning, Dunhill's, Penzance and Frog, but now it is mostly va flakes and vaper flakes with no English blends.

I've been trying some of the codger burleys, since I never did in early days. Prince Al was one of them. If it's cased,it is very light. There is probably some humectant, but again, it is light - it is not goopy at all. Very dry, easy to light and smoke.

i have never heard of PA being referred to as an ARO--it is a Burley based blend with some Virginia (small amount i believe)--likely there is just a trace of Turkish also--
as for my never hearing it referred to as an ARO, i have been known to err, so possibly others may want to weigh in--
i do not think it is cased, or if it is cased not very heavily--i suspect it has just a trace of topping, but have no idea what it may be--
it was/is an old time American classic OTC Burley blend consumed by just about every geezer pipeman in my part of the world 55 years ago--today some of us present day geezers still enjoy the prince--in fact i just had a bowl full in an old "basket case" briar of dubious pedigree--

This is a really interesting thread. I've noticed most seem to not enjoy aromatics any more. I still like them but you have to sift through the crap to find the good ones.

My first tobacco was an aromatic called Ginger Snap from my local tobacconist. Bit like a rabid dog. Next I tried Peterson's University Flake and didn't care for it much. Next was Captain Black's Cherry and I took a few puffs then threw the pouch away. Then it was Frog Morton. First bowl was a bit shocking as I'd never smoked latakia before. Second bowl was delicious. I mostly smoke Va's and VaPer's these days but occasionally smoke a couple aromatics that I really like and an occasional latakia blend.

My first tobacco was CBW and my first non aro was Dunhill EMP. I still smoke a few aros, but now I love my Black House and am getting more into VAs and VaPers.

I started with some horrid Very Berry (or very cherry maybe), gasped, and went back to smoking cigars for a couple of years. My local B&M took me under their wing and slowly introduced me to "mild" English blends - the Frog Morton family, Dunhill London mix and then I was all over the place - Peterson's Irish Flake to Bob's Chocolate flake. I still smoke just about everything (except cherry blends) and every once in a while fire up something pretty sweet just because.

Baron, I have seen the word VaPer being used a lot. Please forgive a newbie, but what exactly is that?

My first non-aromatic blend was Altadis Balken I which my local B&M calls Balken Supreme. Trust me there is nothing supreme about it. I've since discovered FM On the Town and Blue Mountain which are both excellent blends.

A blend that is primarily Virginia tobaccos, with small amounts of perique, a spicy/sweet condimental tobacco, added.

I am personally not a VaPer guy, although I can handle small amounts of perique when latakia and other oriental leaf is used. :puffy:
