Hey, as a new pipe smoker I'm still learning which tobaccos really appeal to me and which ones don't. I've tried about 15 blends now and only 2 really did it for me on the first smoke. Neither one seems to be overly flavored and they each have a little kick to them. If could only have only 5 - 10 tobaccos, what would they be and why? I'll try anything right now.
1. Cornell & Diehl - Bailey's Front Porch

2. Peterson - Irish Whiskey

McCranie's Red Ribbon. Second choice in this department is McClelland 27.
McClelland Black Parrot.
Those 2 (3) are pretty much starting points, from there you can go anywhere.

 Nice response romeo! I'm still making my way through blends of tobacco, but I would definitely say that if I could get some and KEEP it in my cellar all the time, Penzance would be on my list.
Another one I'm becoming quite fond of is Bill Bailey's Balkan.

Lawrence, I was told at a B&M store that stocks Gawith's products that it was going to be another 3 months before they made it back to the US. :(

I would pick 7...
1. Penzance

2. Old Ironsides

3. Quiet Nights

4. 1Q

5. Maple Street

6. Proper English

7. Very aged Latakia
1-3 because they a amazing in their own rights yet they are close enough that they could almost replace each other. 4 and 5 because you have to have some very mellow and sweet smokes every once and awhile. 6 because it is a very pleasant light english blend. 7 because it is one of the best smokes I have ever had!

As a someone who is also fairly new WO Larsen Signature and 2011 are on top of my list. Prince ALbert is good for being an "old school" tobacco. Villiger 1888 Mid Day is another good one.

1. Lane's 1Q

2. MacBaren's Seven Seas Royal

3. Peterson's Sweet Kilarney

4. Best Brown Flake (I forget the maker)

5. Kendal Coffee Caramel
Those are so far my favourites. There are quite a few I still have yet to try though.

For me P.A.,Half and Half, McCellands Dark English. I all so like to mix the P.A. and Dark English to make a nice 4th blend

Still being new, I'd have to say the following in no particular order:
1. Prince Albert

2. Captain Black Royal/1-Q

3. Smitty' 505 (local blend with Latakia and I think Virginias, smells like barbeque)

1. American Patriot - may be an EXACT match of Penzance - but it is a beautiful tobacco - with lots of complexity by Jack Peterson. So - why quibble? Light up friend. ;-)

2. 1776 Old Dominion - one of the finest Aromatics ever made - period. By Jack Peterson. :worship:

3. Gawith&Hogarth Top Black Cherry - a full strength aromatic that is complex and packs a big nicotine wallop.

4. Grandpas by Rich's ties with Hearth & Home Klassic Burley Kake - very similar in taste - Burley, Cocoa and Rum flavoring.

5. "Laura's Cafe Blend - named after my wife - A Private Blend by Russ Oullette - lots of Lemon VA's in this one + perique and Latakia - a perfect all day English and great for the warm weather.

6. Nighttime by Rich's - an incredible, very Full & Complex English with lots of Latakia crafted by Steve Books - who is sadly MIA - although Rich's Cigar Store still offers it. :puffy:

7. #13 or "Magic #13 by Pipeworks and Wilke. Carol Burns has crafted a superb English cross-over blend.

8. Northwoods by Boswell's an unusual take on a full English that has toasted cavendish & an almost incense type of aroma & taste.

9. Virginia Spice - the combination of Red VA's and Cigar leaf satisfies my craving for a stogie and offers a unique taste that can't be beat.

10. Three Blind Moose by Richard Gottlieb at 4 Noggins. The butterscotch taste puts this one in family line of IQ - goes great with coffee.

1. Connoisseur's Choice by Peterson- Has a great blend of Black Cavendish, two Virginia's, and a broken flaske cased wonderfully with tropical fruit, rum, and vanilla. It's heaven in a tin.
2. Sunset Breeze by Peterson- It's another good Pete mix of Vriginia, Burley, and Black Cavendish that has a great casing of Amaretto. Goes great with a cold glass of scotch.
3. McClelland's Best of Show Premium Aromatic- Just had a bowl lastnight and fell in love with it. Not sure of the leaf blend, but it has a wonderful nougat casing, and the tin, smoke, and taste seem to suggest a little caramel as well. Heavenly aromatic.
4. McClelland's Frog Morton on the Bayou- It's my favorite Perique blend. A Balkan blend with Perique added to spice it up a little. As a mostly aromatic smoker, I was kind of turned off by the tin aroma but decided to give it a smoke or two anyways to see how it was, and I'm glad I did. It tastes pretty good smoking it.
5. Sherlock Holmes by Peterson- It's a Virginia/Burley blend and the recipe is supposedly from Ireland around the 1880's about the time of Holmes' character. Most say it's cased with apricot, but I myself, in the tin I have, find more of a raspberry truffle flavor. It's very good and for me it smokes very evenly and to the bottom of the bowl. It's my break in blend for those reasons.
