I would go with Peterson sandblasts. A second choice would be Briarworks. They are just getting out there but there are going to be some nice pipes from these guys. I have an Icarus sandblasted Volcano that is a wonderful smoker. Smokingpipes and P&C currently have both lines in stock.
If I were starting now, limiting myself to production pipes, I would consider Peterson in the higher grades for their history and ongoing production. Per-merger GBD for history, availability and variety of offerings. Neptune, because it would be fun to get in on the ground floor, but I'd have to worry that it could be a short elevator ride if the brand runs into difficulty.
@ flintlock. - I have heard many good things about your choice of Dr. Grabows. I'm thinking seriously about buying a couple in my next hoard, was thinking getting a new one and a good condition older one.
As I said before my aim is to get at least one pipe from as many makers as I can afford and then choose my path from there. After all Im only about 2-3 months into smoking a pipe and I'm finding it a hobby as well as an enjoyment sitting down to relax with a pipe.
I also want to learn how to restore estate pipes and have ordered most of the stuff I will need. Maybe if I find a decent piece of old hardwood I might have a go making my own pipe one day after I have learnt the dynamics of restoration.
Yeah this is a toughie. When I read the title originally my first thought was Nording and I would probably stick with that answer, but if we are going for more traditional machine made I would also say Peterson. They just make so many beautiful well made pipes.
The handmade pipes I have the most of are by Jerry Perry of Colfax, N.C., and Morgen Johansen, Johs, of Denmark.
The production pipes I have the most of are Peterson (no complaints) and Savenelli. I also like Stanwell, Chacom,
BC, Grabow, Kaywoodie push bits, MM and Old Dominion cobs, and a number (quite a number) of others.
Sure, I'd like Dunhills and Castellos and other high level pipes, but I'm not going to make that financial commitment.
I have to agree with an earlier poster, it's not so much the brand but the shape for me. Right now I'm really lovin' some Lovats. But if I had to pick a brand it would be Savinelli first and Peterson second. With both you'd be hard pressed to find one that wasn't a good smoker.
After buying a few pipes and now having about 30-40, if I had to choose I wold collect Chacom's as I love the variety and the smoking pleasure they give, a close second would be the Petersons
It would be a hard choice.Out of the pipes I had in the past I loved my Dunhill 5108's, my ferndown 3* bent bulldogs, and the Ashton I had that Bill made. I soon will have a Norther Briars to compare as well as an Askwith.

northernneil is also on the bandwagon.
So far I have 4 Chacoms with many more on the wish list:
Chacom Salsa 297 Smooth Canadian
Chacom Samba 44 Ebony Bent Dublín with Jade Green Rim and stem highlights
Chacom Alize 815
Chacom Volute 1 Claude Robin Creation
My Peterson Sterling Silver 80s Bent Bulldog is an awsome pipe as well, but as toby67 states, there are many varieties when it comes to Chacom.
Maybe we need to start a thread to post pictures of Chacom's we have to show off their variety, also because I would love to see your Chacom's dottie unless one already exists
This is the Chacom I recently purchased for $25 AUD in near mint condition with original sock and box.
I would like to say Dunhill but they are way too pricey. I have a couple but I have way more Petes so that is my choice. I browse the different websites, hit the few B&M's in the area, and I keep buying mostly Petes. No one else comes close in my collection. Put that in your pipe & smoke it!
Dave
That's why I love the Chacom's their variety is so unlike any other pipe company I know. They range from the wierd and wonderful to the normal type shapes, but as they are all great smokers. I received the above pictured pipe today and it smokes wonderfully, it's in barely smoked condition without a scratch and came with the origional sock and box. I love it, the above picture does it no justice, that was the pic I purchased on and best part, I only paid $25 for it with free shipping.
Tough question for me. My firstpipe was a cheap pipe from a cigarette smoke shop, but my second was a Ser Jacopo. Talk about a jump in quality and taste! As of now, I have 2 Jacs, a couple Stanwells, a Peterson, a HUGE Radice, A Butz, Doodler..and a menagerie of Kaywoodie/YelloBole and Grabows.
If i were to go with 1 brand, I would base it on several factors.. Quality, Taste, Price. The one I choose would be estate Stanwells. For me, the best smoke for the money.
