If this is true, I think that this blend(Solano Special) I got in Fairfield CA is an English. Whatever it is, I love it. It doesn't taste like any of the aromatics I've tried so far, and I've tried maybe 10 in the past couple of weeks. Just my two cents on it.

You will turn to the darkside. It is inevitable! Do not fight it! :D
I like a few aromatics every now and then, but I couldn't live without the English blends. The first one I ever tried was Dunhill Nightcap and I was hooked. If for some reason English blends up and disappeared and were no longer available, I would probably quit pipe smoking! :puffy:

Yep old burning house, campfire. I guess it depends on the type of latakia that's in it but to me some smell like BBQ sauce too, estorica margate for example, smells like kc masterpiece to me.

I too really enjoy nightcap. But it does have some perique in it, which is rapidly becoming my true love.

I thought the campfire smell was something lingering from the matches. Anyhow, the force is strong with this one.

Along with the smokey, bbq smell I've also noticed a "leathery" smell. Whatever it is, I love it!

Sure, that is if the old house had a lot of old dirty socks in it...
Kddign aside, I like the smell, woodsy, campfire kinda odors. Latakia and I just don't seem to get along very well.

If you have to ask, you probably already know the answer. :)
Was the Solano Special a bulk purchase, so there's no tin to read? If there's a dark, smoky aroma in the bag and the smoke has a really unsubtle but complex and full taste and your wife hates it, it's an English.
While I like English blends, I tend to stick to aromatics except for when I feel the urge for that kick in the mouth. I've tried three different ones: Frog Morton on the Town, 221B Arcadia and Mac Baren HH Syrian. I like the McClellands better, and what I think I like about the Froggy is the Basma oriental. The HH Syrian is a bit monochromatic. But I digress.

I bought an ounce of it. It was in a jar. I THINK it was bulk. I'm still new to a lot of things here.

Latakia smells like a wet dog or a sweaty saddle to me. However I love that burnt smokey taste and if it also has perique with it....heaven in a pipe.

Thanks for the info Chris. Seemed confusing at first, because 1oz doesn't seem like bulk in a sense, but now I get the concept.

Yes to me too, when I first heard bulk I envisioned someone with a 50 gallon drum of baccy leaving Sam's club..

When I take the lid off any English blend the aroma reminds me of a tyre warehouse my father used to manage.

It reminds me of a camp fire and the smell of a brand new leather jacket. Both are things that I like. Add the plum-ness of Perique and the roasty, BBQ smell of some dark-fired Kentucky and you have a recipe for awesome!

While I find that I really enjoy English Latakia containing blends, I have only sampled a few blends. My sampling of old home burning odor is non- existent. In time I expect to have sampled a statistically viable population of English blends to have determined an average smell. It is however extremely dubious that I will emass the same with respect to an average "old home burning" smell. Therefore I cannot with even a modicum of certainty atest that the odor of an English blend an an old house burning are directly comparable. 8O

A good English blend will smell like you are sitting in the back seat of a 78 Camaro with leaky T-tops, next to a wet Labrador, while the guy behind the wheel is power braking the hell out of it.
But it smokes a lot better than those rear tires do.
