From @Briarcutter 's Humor post: growing up in the 70s, I remember when quicksand was apparently considered a real threat, and multiple times I read/was taught how to survive it. I've only seen quicksand twice in my life, and never needed to use that knowledge.
Ha,ha. My sister sent me that one. I always send he cute ones from the forum so she repaid me. Like you I grew up seeing it in the movies and just assumed it was a real threat. I had to look quicksand up myself. Well, according to the web, what ever that's worth, it's technically real but several articles I seen said it's impossible for a human to sink in it much past your waist. Specific gravity stuff...

My millennial stepdaughter always asks, “Steve, how do you know so much about everything?”.
She never got to read encyclopedias because there wasn’t 24/7 TV and electronic babysitting going on…
Back 15-18 years ago I had a nice little office job in the advertising sector.
When I got bored (65% of my shift) I would go to Wikipedia and hit the “random article” button and read about whatever it gave me”.
I too read through volumes of encyclopedia as a juvenile- usually while in bed.

Double-decker buses, and if you wanted to smoke, you went upstairs to the upper deck; single-decker buses, where if you wanted to smoke, you sat at the back.

Seats on trains and in theatres where on the back of the one in front of you was not only a little ashtray but also a match striker.

Every small town had at least one B&M tobacconist. Even our village had one.

Even households where nobody smoked kept at least one ashtray, in case someone came to call who did.

Big, ornamental table lighters, so everyone could light up around the table immediately after dinner. I still have a wedgewood one my parents owned.

Back in the 60’s, 70’ s, 80’s I wore a suit and tie to work and when flying on business trips. Then in the 90’s business attire loosened up a bit and a sport jacket, slacks and a tie became acceptable and then dress down, business casual, Friday’s were great. By the time I retired in 2002 slacks and sport shirts were the norm. Being an old fart and accustomed more to the past I’m not sure if the way things are today is better?

I remember when almost all men and boys wore leather shoes and we polished them!

Every bit of footwear I own is some sort of animal skin or hide.
Some polished, (2nd from left, band promo photo),

…and some not. I have not owned a pair of sneakers in over 20 years. The closest I come is leather Timberland hikers. 90% of the time, it’s western boots for me, whether they be my daily workhorse boots, or fancy snakeskin, lizard or eel.
Even my house slippers are buckskin.
No crocs, flip-flops or sandals for me either, but to each his own.

I remember when as a kid in the late 70s I used to stack hay bales at the farm down the street from my suburban house...and when the farm was sold and it became 7 big mini-mansions with million dollar views of...the freeway.

and I remember training our bird dog (shooting over him) in the marsh that was next to that freeway, before it became a hub of high tech corporate headquarters and ultra ritzy lakefront apartments.

That brings back fond memories. I did the same at my buddies grandparents small dairy farm. This was late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. Last I knew the farm was still in the family. I don’t think they had milk cows anymore but they had oxen they were using for logging.

Just the other day I was telling some friends how in 1986, at 15 years old, I rode my horse to work at an Amish cheese factory 5 days a week.
We only made "farmers" cheese. It was like a cross between mozzarella and Ricotta. People came from all over to buy it. It was completely tasteless and rubbery to me. :)
In 1986 I remember when the challenger exploded, the statue of liberty was being repaired and that all came form my soclalthic news
