I remember... no Internet. Pretty simple as that.
Well, okay.. maybe not THAT simple. I was born in the Blizzard of 1993, so technically there was internet even before I was conceived. Perhaps I should clarify, I FIRMLY remember the WORLD as it existed before the internet-ification of LITERALLY FRICKIN' EVERYTHING. Sure, it existed... heck, it was even starting to be "widely" adopted into my formative years... but it looked and acted EXTREMELY different than today.
Back then, in my middle class corner of the world, even IF people had internet through the 90's-00's it was almost always via 1 single computer... generally in a shared space of the home. It was utilized intermittently for various tasks and entertainments.. but that was pretty much all it was. Yes, I grew up with technology as it developed... but I had the fortune of being the absolute last generation who was raised where a majority of us had developed our brains properly enough by the ages we were being introduced to it.
The result? I still remember how life and humans used to function... as in properly/naturally as they had for untold millennia beforehand. The effect? Even though I am half the age of probably a majority of members here, I can still RELATE to you all. I still remember the dynamics you are all speaking of here... sure I may not remember something in the 70's personally... but I remember learning about it through my (grand)parents because I still possess the skills to communicate with them and am able to conceptualize a world that wasn't that much different than the one I formed my personhood in. Sure, the prices and hot actresses and music may have been different... but the VERY FABRIC of our society and culture had not yet been (purposefully or not) utterly hijacked.
They are actually concluding now, from ever more scientific studies, that folks who were born around the turn of the millennium, give or take, are literally not the same. The biological circuitry of our brains are literally wired differently. That's why many folks from my specific age group many times find more in common with those 30-50 years older than us than those even 5-10 years younger than us. The combination of social media and 24/7 private internet access (via smartphones) being introduced to youngsters today from practically popping out the womb is being shown to cause severe anxiety, stress, attention deficit, IQ deficiency, and an overall warped view of reality.
I sincerely mourn the loss of development and wonder what so many of the newer generations were robbed of.. usually out of ignorance and/or laziness by those who were supposed to be nurturing them. Of course all hope is not lost... there are factions of us millennials who are ever more awakening to these deleterious effects and finding ways to minimize them. My girlfriend and I are working towards our goal of buying a farmstead and raising a (god-willing) large family who are raised and loved in a manor more consistent with wholesome and traditional human nature... but sad to say we are still in the very narrow minority...
