The boys loved their tobacco too, puts a whole different perspective on us as we whinge, whine and lament a change in blend. None of us would last around men like these!
I read a book on that journey, highly recommended. Per the article you posted, key point:
"Shackleton decided their best chance was to drag the lifeboats across the ragged ice to open water and then sail to find help. It would be an enormous physical task, and each man was limited to only three pounds of personal possessions, including one pound of pipe tobacco. The pipe tobacco was essential enough to account for a third of the weight each man was permitted."

who knows. I mean if we lived in their time and place. Then again maybe we do have people like that now, they just don't get the same kind of press.
That said I often am astonished by how soft many people are.

That is George Adamson, his wife Joy wrote the Born Free series. He wrote an interesting autobio called 'My Pride and Joy'. He worked caring for lions in Kenya, and was killed by Somali bandits in 1989 at age 83. More info:

Quo on Goodreads tells how he, as a lad, visited George at his African camp: "being young & somewhat less than adequately fearful of the local warnings, a friend & myself would borrow a rattly antique Landrover from a mission station run by the Italian Consolata Fathers, stopping at the local Indian (Hindu) store in Meru to buy a bottle of White Horse scotch and we then had full admission to George's world for the weekend. Bringing some Three Nuns or other pipe tobacco also helped to seal the deal." Source:

Thanks for that! I had the photo but no info on it. What a fascinating character, I’ll read into him.
