Hi all, long time lurker who's been posting a bit lately. First I want to thank all the great active members here. Many a question has been answered by searching through some great threads.

I've been a long time aficionado of fine tobacco, but for years it was the occasional cigar during the nice weather. A few years ago I became drawn to pipe smoking. Not sure why really. Maybe a midlife crisis is making me contemplate about the times when I was a little kid and would go and visit my grandparents once or twice a year. My Grandpa smoked Holiday Mixture. I loved the way that house smelled. Anyways, I grabbed a couple of cobs, and eventually moved up to a couple of Savinellis. Like a lot of beginners I struggled a bit, but I mainly because I was trying to get the pipe to smoke like a cigar. I was trying to get big billowing puffs of smoke and would be annoyed at having to relight it from time to time.

Well, I don't know if something finally click or I read enough threads to convince me that I was doing it wrong and that even the most seasoned pipe smoker deals with relights but feel like I finally learned how to really enjoy the pipe now. I realize that pipes are to be smoked slowly. I've experience much better flavors now that I've got the hang of slowing down and the occasional relight is now something that I've learned to enjoy as part of the overall experience.

Thanks again to all who contribute to help us noobs get the hang of it.

Welcome! Relighting is just part of it. You got it right when you realized it's to be enjoyed slowly! Don't forget to use your tamper as well. We collect pipes and lighters and tampers for good reason I guess.
Using the tamper properly has increased my game lately. I think At first I was pushing down too hard instead of lightly to help pushed the embers down.

Welcome from France

@BronzeAgePiper and @cosmicfolklore gave me some great advice that finally made things click. Everyone said slow down but that was only part of it. It didn’t register until they talked about learning to take wisps rather than puffs if smoke. That was the ticket for me. Slow is frequency but intensity also needs to be monitored.

Im a bit on the hyper side so super slow is tougher. I find pleasure and great flavor in frequent small puffs. It stays cool and while there are always relights they are quick and easy when you also get tamping technique right.
