Hi all, long time lurker who's been posting a bit lately. First I want to thank all the great active members here. Many a question has been answered by searching through some great threads.
I've been a long time aficionado of fine tobacco, but for years it was the occasional cigar during the nice weather. A few years ago I became drawn to pipe smoking. Not sure why really. Maybe a midlife crisis is making me contemplate about the times when I was a little kid and would go and visit my grandparents once or twice a year. My Grandpa smoked Holiday Mixture. I loved the way that house smelled. Anyways, I grabbed a couple of cobs, and eventually moved up to a couple of Savinellis. Like a lot of beginners I struggled a bit, but I mainly because I was trying to get the pipe to smoke like a cigar. I was trying to get big billowing puffs of smoke and would be annoyed at having to relight it from time to time.
Well, I don't know if something finally click or I read enough threads to convince me that I was doing it wrong and that even the most seasoned pipe smoker deals with relights but feel like I finally learned how to really enjoy the pipe now. I realize that pipes are to be smoked slowly. I've experience much better flavors now that I've got the hang of slowing down and the occasional relight is now something that I've learned to enjoy as part of the overall experience.
Thanks again to all who contribute to help us noobs get the hang of it.
