Well, you gotta admit that's an unfortunate choice of name...
I've always thought the point of cheroot holders was to avoid staining fingers or gloves and leaving an odor on the fingers. Apparently the white-gloved arisocracy of that era was into smell my finger games? I dunno.
Bingo! That's exactly correct. The upper crust of the gilded age didn't worry about smoking a cigar or a cigarette down to the last drippy bit. They could afford all they wanted. Besides, who would want to take away the fun of tossing the butt in the street and watching people fight over it?

To each their own I guess, who am I to judge. I personally like either a pipe or a cigar but not a mix of both. When I have a pipe I enjoy all the steps from pinching the leaf to packing, to the first light, tamping, etc. When I have a cigar I have a bunch of rituals as well which all add to the experience. But as long as your enjoying the smoke I guess it’s all that matters.

I forgot to mention..those pipe plugs are pretty neat in concept though, I never knew anything like that existed. I guess it makes sense for someone on the go or someone who struggles with packing then bowl for a nice consistent smoke.

Public figures in Tito's age group made quite a point of having distinctive smoking habits as a matter of their public image. Hence we had General MacArthur with his tall corncob pipe, FDR with his cigarette holder, Stalin with his pipes, Churchill (and later Castro) with their cigars. Tito probably thought this was distinctive and he may have felt there was some health benefit in cooling the smoke, as did people with their cigarette holders. It does illustrate how integrated smoking was with the projection of a public personality at the time. People felt a deep attachment to the brand of cigarette they smoked, etc.

I get that some people like it, but me, to me it just always looked dumb, crazy, toopid, etc. Everybody to their own kick, but please, do me a favor -- if you do it like that, don't do it where I have to see it, PLEASE.
