I have never stuck a nub in my pipe, but I do love to smoke a good cigar down to the very end. I personally really enjoy that last inch of a good cigar. My usual solution is a toothpick just past the cap, whcih allows me to smoke it down to the 3/8ths of an inch or so

Nearly a century ago, there was a prepacked tobacco in the shape of a cigar nub made to just drop into your pipe and light it.
Vauen tried (and failed) to revive this with their Pipoo:

I also try to smoke as much as I can of a cigar, but going to measures to smoke it past the band smacks of miserliness to me. I know tobacco has gotten seriously expensive, but c'mon...

I always smoke it at least to the band. Some cigars are good down to the nub, but I find the last inch or so of most of them to be hot, acrid, and really not worth the trouble. But those rare few are quite good, and I just can't put them down.

You leave the band/ring on the cigar? Why? Do you forget what you are smoking?
Yeah, it tastes better with the band on. No, I remove the band prior to lighting, just using it as a reference to describe a certain point on the stick. Some people smoke with the band on and then remove it when necessary though. I guess that visual stimulus improves the experience for some?

I leave the band on. Bragging rights, LOL.
Trying to remove the band can result in a torn/unraveling wrapper: I don't want that.
I read that removal of the band or leaving it on is also part of cigar etiquette: in some quarters, Europe mostly, the band has to be removed prior to lighting—apparently it's considered bad form to be visually bragging about your smoke. In other quarters it's bad form to remove it. Since my cigar smoking is a solitary activity, I just leave it on.

I generally have removed the band. Take a small knife and slit the band to avoid damaging the wrapper. If it's a good cigar, I'll smoke it down the where I can no longer hold it without burning my lips or fingers. If it is mediocre, I smoke it until I don't want it any longer which. That's not long if it isn't really good. I've never stuck a cigar in a pipe nor do I see that happening in the future. To each their own though.

Seems to me that a lot of the old meer cheroot holders I've seen on Ebay here in Europe feature some sort of equine scene. I speculate that these may have been part of the horse racing/betting culture. If that is the case it may well have been a social status and social indicator sort of thing.

In my opinion the Vauen pipoo pipes above look more like marijuana pipes than tobacco pipes.

I usually remove the band, primarily because I tend to smoke it all the way down to the nub. By that point it’s so full of spit I don’t think I’d want to put it in a pipe

You're not the first one to get that impression. Which is why I'm wary when smoking my Vauen Quixx whilst driving. Don't wanna get pulled over.

weezell - I get the idea of dropping a nub in a pipe to finish it off, but why smoke the the whole cigar like that? No judgment intended, just wondering what the pipe adds to the process?

I've always thought the point of cheroot holders was to avoid staining fingers or gloves and leaving an odor on the fingers. Apparently the white-gloved arisocracy of that era was into smell my finger games? I dunno.
As for the band tearing the wrapper, I find this is only a problem on particularly delicate wrapper leaves, namely Connecticut-shade and African Cameroon.

True, that's why I remove the ring 5 minutes into smoking the cigar. I find that once the wrapper gets a little warmed up so does the glue on the inside part of the ring, thus it can be unfolded easier without the risk of damaging the wrapper.

When I associated with fancy people long ago, leaving the wrapper on a lit cigar was akin to keeping your hat on indoors or not standing when a lady entered the room. Or failing to hold open the door for women. Now it seems none of those things hold water.
