Hello fellow briar lovers! I'm a veteran cigar smoker but only recently uncovered the world of pipes and pipe tobaccos. I held off for so long, because I had assumed -- wrongly -- that pipe tobaccos weren't that interesting, by comparison, to cigars. I'd imagined that they all smelled like cherry and would irritate my non-existent sweet tooth. I couldn't have been more wrong.

So, I'm about 3 weeks into this new addiction -- I mean hobby -- and like a lot of interests, I don't do much half arsed. I started with a couple of new Savinellis and a Peterson; in the last week, I've scored a couple of vintage Stanwells and a Kaywoodie at a decent price. What confounds me isn't the selection of available pipes but the range of tobacco products. It seems like we're living in the golden age of pipe tobaccos. Cigars were simpler by comparison: find a few reliable brands and stick with them. Aside from the range of flavors (I'm won over by English blends), I'm attracted to the procedural aspect of pipe smoking. Fits with the rest of my hobbies. I look forward to learning more about pipes, their history and various tobacco blends.

Welcome from...Wyoming where in Wyoming are you? Might be able to give some tips on where to get good tobacco or meet up for a smoke.

From the Harmony H169 in your profile picture I’m guessing you’re a Buck Owens fan? Buck was a lifelong pipe smoker if you didn’t know. Don Rich was a pipe smoker as well, and arguably one of the best pickers in the world.View attachment 201981View attachment 201982View attachment 201983
Oh, I'm a tremendous Buck Owens fan. And a Don Rich, Tom Brumley, Willie Cantu, Doyle Holly and the whole bunch fan. I don't think there's any question that Don was an unbeatable picker.

Hello and welcome from West Virginia. I would recommend that you take it slow on the pipe purchasing and buy 1oz. samples with the tobacco. You can only smoke one pipe at a time and if you start with samples you won't have a lot of tobacco laying around that you might not care for.
