I’m just a simpleton, but I simply wet a qtip Run it inside the mortise, let it swell the wood, and Im good to go. Sometimes it takes more than one application of the water swab, but it’s cheap and easy
I will try that next time. The mortise drying out over time might explain how the tenon got loose in the first place... (?)

You're not a simpleton. as so often the simplest methods are often the best.
I did not mean to hijack your post, it accidentally happened since this is my preffered method too.
