I just wait for jmpcwjr to post that my exposure is too high, and my background is all wrong.
That's what happens after many smokes and what is sought after from meerschaum enthusiasts. The first picture is from another website - it shows a really ugly, rotten coloration, in my opinion.
So far, that one isn't showing much internal coloring yet, likely due to the thickness of the material. That one is mostly just showing discoloration from being heated and handled. The next pic is from this forum. It shows a really nice, even coloration which I like.
I'm just smoking it.I believe the pipe in the second pic (which looks great) belongs to @hoosierpipeguy.
Maybe hoosier would like comment on how he's getting his to color so nice...or perhaps he's doing nothing special and just smoking it.
Thirty some odd years ago, a silver haired handsome man who was a dead ringer for the country music star Charlie Rich had a huge CAO Beckler carved meerschaum out on display on a sort of glass island for the endless stream of ladies who visited his pipe shop next to a popular beauty shop, across the road from Battlefield Mall in Springfield, Missouri.A big welcome to the PM monthly discussion about meerschaum coloring. This month we are offering a 15 lb block of bees wax to the most original wives tale on pipe coloring. Without further ado the floor is now open to all.....
That's a precolored one.This one looks close
I agree but there also seems to be some lava on the top of the hat, and the shank looks darker than the rest of the pipe. Tinted wax + some use maybe? That's a precolored one.

The colors subtly transited from the rich reddish brown hue of the stem to a shade of tan on the lattice work near the top. There were even sections with rainbow colors on close examination.
This one looks close.

It was the owner’s personal pipe, which he smoked aromatic tobaccos that filled the shop with a glorious aroma.
He’d sell you one much like it the same size for a thousand dollars, which were arranged on the top shelf behind him.
But for a third of that amount the lady could buy a smaller version her escort could carry around with them, but of equal grade and quality meerschaum.
The owner would explain that his pipes were like the fine diamond on her finger.
The grade and quality can only be determined by price and the reputation of the seller.
If he ever missed a sale of a three hundred some dollar fine meerschaum, I wasn’t there to see it.
Of course, him looking like Charlie Rich didn’t hurt sales at all,
Ive never heard of the absorption scale. Could you elaborate? When I purchase my Meer pipes i be sure to message the seller and request that it be a 5 or better on the absorption scale, really works out and gives you a more even coloration, the higher the number on the A.S. the more even and faster the color.
He's full of crap.Ive never heard of the absorption scale. Could you elaborate?
Also Im aware that you could be joking and purposely confusing some people...like me. Ha But I am also hoping that the absorption scale is a real thing.
That kind of what I figured; still funny though. He's full of crap.
Ur just upset your Altinay isn't a 5 on the absorption scale! He's full of crap.
