Meh. Still ordering small bulk amounts to figure out what I like. Have triggered free shipping when I buy a pipe, but otherwise just try not go overboard. I already have three jars that are never getting smoked.

Related/not related story....

My bass player just got a Dr. Grabow and started asking me for a non aro recommendation. I gave him some Dunhill Ready Rubbed to try. He loved it. I offered to order a tin for him several times and he never replied. The he spent $23 for one tin at a B&M. ? It was on sale for about $7 at P&C up until last week. It's only about $10 normally anyway.
It helps to support the B&Ms. I have been hitting Perettis at least once a month and always walk out with a pound of something. Watch City, I just discovered, is only 20 minutes or so from Peretti.... Will be visiting them soon. Both are only 1.25 hrs from me, more or less.

I buy at least the minimum to get free shipping. It makes no sense to do otherwise. I've accumulated around 450 pounds in the past three years.

The first thing you need to do is determine how much per year you smoke. Take a shot at estimating your remaining life span. Multiply that times your yearly consumption. Now you know what you need to buy. It's simply a matter of finding the time and budget to make the purchases.

I agree. The only place i have paid for shipping is Estervals as it is unavoidable. While i am now slowing down and reassessing my cellar (sometimes i wonder why i purchased so much of certain blends which i no longer even like and how i got hooked by making multiple tin purchases of limited runs that seemed likely to be great but turned out to be flat and boring). As a general rule, my tobacco purchasing over the years falls squarely into the " more than I should but less than I wanted " catergory. True for many things in life but i am older and wiser now, or perhaps just tired.

Only have 2 local B&Ms with any pip offerings. One has very few. The other has a bunch, but they are almost all Sutliff aros. Not much variety.

it really depends but certainly 6 months, I guess part of the issue is new FDA regulations and hence I'm thinking I should just stock up a little more
Who knows what laws will pass.
It's really extreme here in Nanny State Australia with plain packaging [that come with a disgusting pic] and 50g of tobacco now over $120.

Tobacco will either hold it's value or go up in price, especially tinned baccy.
Properly stored, tobacco keeps indefinitely and many blends improve with age.
Since the future is uncertain it would be wise to stock up on as much as you can afford while it's still reasonably priced.

There 's a wide range of decent blends that come in bulk that's far cheaper than buying tins.
If you're not familiar with bulk blends, just buy a heap of different blends that you think you might like by the ounce.

Those that you like, buy as many pounds as you can afford and store in masons jars.
Sign up for notifications from on-line tobacconists like P&C and www.tobaccopipes.com and take advantage of sales [P&C just had a $1.75 per ounce sale on bulk blends for instance]

No such thing as 'too much' tobacco.

Tastes change.
For a while I went completely off aromatics and only smoked English, American and straight blends of VaBur or Va's for example.

After a year or two I felt like something sweeter now and again.
These days I smoke a variety of genres.
A lot of aromatics I'll blend in some Virginia, Burley or both to suit my tastes.
Since baccy is so expensive here nothing goes to waste. There's not been a single blend that I could not 'fix' by mixing with other blends.

Blends that really aren't to your taste, you can trade or gift.

I tend to order just enough to get free shipping since I'm a cheap bastard lol. Hell the cost of shipping is usually around the price of a tin, so it's like getting it for free right? ..lol.

When I order tobacco I usually get mostly bulk but recently have been stocking up on tins. Sales help but I go for variety (wide cellar rather than deep) and don't have more than 2 tins of any blend (bulk pounds as well) but for the price bulk is where it's at IMO.

I mostly order bulk blends and some tin's from SP. I never have a pre- planned intention of how much I order. However it seems to be an ongoing theme of just over a pound each order, give or take a few ounces. Smoking pipes is located in the next state over from where I live so shipping is always under $10, most of the time about $7. So shipping doesn't effect my decision when ordering. I mostly buy to smoke not cellar.

I don't buy a lot any more. Some members of the pipe club meet over at my house once a week and they usually are kind enough to leave me tobacco. May three times a year I order ten tins (3 tins each of my three favorites plus one to speculate on).

I order a pound to a pound and a half per order. My stash consists of roughly 60lbs, which I sometimes find a little excessive. I'm 35, smoke a bowl a day on average, and no idea weather my usage will go up or down in the future. All I know is that 60lb should last a long-ass time
