My wife went on a three week trip to Vietnam with her mother. She asked me what I might like her to bring home for me. I told her to check the duty free shop on the way back for a scotch. She texted me and asked me about brands. She mentioned Laphroaig 4 oak. I had never heard of 4 oak so I googled it. It's made for duty free shops and not available to the US market. I think she paid $60 for a liter? It definitely has the characteristic Laphroaig smoke up front but had a lighter less iodine flavor. Mid palette has a soft sweetness then finished with the heavy smoke. If your ever in a duty free shop you might want to pickup a bottle to sample. If you're into Islay malts.
I usually go for an Islay when I buy Scotch. There's nothing like Laphroaig when the weather is cold and damp. Ardbeg is my favorite though.
If you want to give Islays a try but don't want to spend a lot on a test bottle, try McClellands Islay. I believe it's 8 year old Bowmore and it's not bad at all. Price is about $20.
