How many lbs should 3 bowls a day consume in a year? I figure 6-7lbs at ~10 bowls an oz. What do you figure for investing in your cellar?

Im in a place where the only pipe tobacco I get is brought to me by family or friends when they visit, and limited by a lb per person each trip. Im tryna plan ahead for hard times to come. Currently have about 15lbs I think.

Damn, that's quite an unfortunate predicament you find yourself in.

I'd say, always hedge on the heavy side, try to ask any and all you know to carry up to the limit?

Lately I've been smoking an average of 1 bowl every 3 months. At 20 bowls per 50 gram tin it will take me 5 years to finish one tin and my 39 pound cellar will last 1,769 years.
I probably smoe about 3 to 4 pounds a year. Given how much I stupidly socked away over the years, the sun will go supernova long before I finish it.

Think of it this way... at least you have plenty of options, and you're doing your part to help ensure pipe tobacco blenders stay in business?

If SP keeps having sales while I have money, I'm going to be joining you guys. Already have at least 10 or 15 C&D blends in my wishlist waiting for them to go on sale, and I have a bunch of GLP due to arrive tomorrow (Friday, today technically, but I don't count it as the next day until I wake up) because of the recent sale on those.

Of course, my cellar pales in comparison to most. Will take a few years to catch up.

I always come up with different numbers when I try to estimate yearly consumption. My pipes are on the small-to-medium side, so I figure they take about 2 grams of tobacco on average. I usually only smoke 1 or 2 bowls a day (some days are none), so let's say 1.5. 3 grams a day for 365 days is about 1095g... 2.4 pounds per year? Pretty easy to keep up with that rate with new purchases. 📦

A good estimate for the average bowl is 3 grams of tobacco per bowl. The math is easy from there. Use Google for unit conversion if you need.
I heard Chasing Embers quote 3-4 grams per bowl in another thread once. Now I know he smokes big pipes but this seems crazy high to me. I’d be surprised if an average bowl crested 2g for most of us. Especially for those of us that smoke your more light and airy blends. I will have to put my next bowl’s worth on the digital scale to see, but think I’m pretty spot on without it. (used to sell herb in college, after I while I didn’t even need a scale. Could eyeball a gram and on a bad day might be off by a tenth, no matter the moisture content or bud density).

I have a “cellar” and add to it but no idea how much is there and it really is more about blends I like than any worry about anything. If for some reason I can’t or won’t acquire someday and eventually run out, I’ll be gifting away some nice pipes.

A few years back, when this question was posed here for the umpteenth time, I calculated my average pipe holds 3 grams of averaged tobacco. I then calculated that I had enough tobacco to last me, at current consumtion rates, to age 92. But not to worry, because I have enough cigars to last until age 103. The real crisis is that I only have enough Carnation Malted Milk to last until this November.

Is something happening to Carnation Malted Milk? Do we all need to stock up?

I just want to have enough Tobaccy to last me until I die. I guess I have between 50 and 100 pounds, and still buy whatever I want within reason.

Some months I may buy 5 to 10 Tins, (depending what's available) and between 1 to 3 Lbs. Bulk, also depending on what's available.

Depending what is available, and what's on sale are the key factor as to how much, and when I stock up.

I just told my wife, she has my permission to contact my local B&M and sell, give, donate, or barter any leftover Tobaccy when I go to The Great Tobaccy Shop in The Sky!

However, If I live longer than her, I'll donate it to my Favorite Forums Box Pass! 😁

It seems as though you regret socking so much tobacco away.
Do you?
If so, why?
Just curious.
It’s money I could have better used in other ways and it takes up a lot of space. The funny thing is, until I assembled all of it to pack for the move I didn’t realize just how much I had accumulated. Pallets that I had forgotten about kept turning up in the recesses of the closets.
Compared to other cellars it’s not that big, but that’s not the point. For me it’s an excessive amount and I’m not fond of excess.
When things settle down I’ll start selling it off. At least I stopped buying several years ago.
Part of the process of moving involved getting rid of stuff I don’t need or no longer use. That process really changed my mindset. Every time I let go of some “treasure” I felt happier and freer, more right sized. More sane, more anchored to reality. I’m not my stuff.
I’ve always been a collector and enjoy the hunt. But now I want better rather than more.

Could not agree more. We did the downsize a couple of years ago and have never felt freer! It is interesting to see this dialogue in a post specifically about consumption.

I attempted to estimate my consumption level perhaps a dozen years ago or so. My best calculation was suggesting a yearly consumption of roughly 12-14 pounds.
