Definitely. Ive been on an Italian binge for an good while. Ive yet to grab one that wasn’t too notch. There are a few that are special. It’s hard to say what makes them special. They just are.

My living is made making handmade saxophone mouthpieces. While most things can be measured, some cannot. I can make every piece to be a good one. However, there are a few that are just special. What makes them so? Who can say. I’m of the belief that the same holds true in the making of pipes. So many variables interact to create an experience. Which ones count the most…who can guess

I recommend using a tobacco not too heavy in nicotine when smoking a saxophone!

i couldn’t agree more. From my experience, the ones in southern Italy are definitely hard to keep my hands off.

Hardly work, more documentation and troubleshooting. I write out work orders for engineers, do time studies, and test ergonomic applications. More hours than physical labor plus for the next two weeks every hour I work is double time and a half bringing my hourly pay to $170/hr for a 12 hour work day. I may have aches and pains, but I'm not complaining.

That's pretty good compensation. Much better than below the line animation. I wouldn't be complaining either. But there is a point where the pay matters a lot less than whether work is rewarding in other ways.

There will be a stopping point. Just making sure my kids will be well taken care of when I'm gone.

I wonder what percentage on this forum are collectors? If we define a collector to have more than, say, six pipes.

That definition would include damn near everyone on this forum. It's pretty easy to accumulate a half-dozen pipes of any quality before you know it. I think I have that many cobs alone!

I never "consider" it. Just load up another bowl and go.
Especially on a day like today when all I'm doing is watching NFL here in the TV room all day.
The wife is busy in the kitchen baking cakes and making dinner and prepping for tonight when we have lots of people come over.
I just finished the third bowl of the day already and more to come (packing now) - My Mixture by the way - and we haven't even made it to halftime yet hehe...and...yes, it's all in the same pipe.
This is a Dunhill pipe I got new about 35 years ago, smoked it a lot since.
Always treat all my pipes this way. No babying.
Still going strong, no "stinky" or any weaknesses whatsoever.

The pipe as a tool, or car analogy has been proposed. It is apt. A pipe performs best when regularly smoked; there is little need for maintenance other than occasional reaming.

I've found it's OK to smoke a pipe twice, back-to-back, then rest at least a week.

I will put the bowl close to my nose at first.
If I can sense some damp smell inside the bowl, which means there is still moisture inside, so I will not smoke it.
If the smell is pretty dry, then I will fill it and smoke.

How long do I let my pipes rest? Depends on their age. The youngsters seem to have unlimited energy and can stay up all night while the elder pipes…well grandpa it’s 5 o clock; it’s late; let’s get you to bed!

I have smoked the same pipe multiple times in a day with no problems. I find that as long as the pipe is somewhat cooled and the bottom of the bowl is dry then I don't have any issues.

I’ve smoked a cob continuously all day and I enjoyed the experience very much. Not sure you need to rest a cob pipe it your smoking the same Haunted Bookshop all the day long. ️

I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I have about 6 pipes and just rotate them.

If you want to appreciate all the aromas in a blend, it's better to use a "fresh" pipe. After a lot of experimentation, in my opinion, a pipe with a lot of rest will be always better than one other without pause. So, I let a minimum of 1 week between each smoke.
