How long to rest your pipe really depends on your logistics. If you have one pipe, run pipe cleaner at the end of smoke, wipe out the bowl and go again. If you have two pipes, switch around after smoke and cleaning. If three.. You get the idea. Or follow the traditions of old timers and keep on smoking one pipe until you can't use it no more. All things considered, it's your pipe in the end. Do whatever you want. I have around 30 or 40 pipes. When I used to smoke pipe regularly, I smoke one bowl a day. So, my pipes used to get about 30 days of rest.

Same. There are smokers, and smoker/collectors. I will always baby my high grades, and I smoke once a day at most.

I vacillate between being very disciplined and being a complete slob. Part of the consequence of my move was that I had to put most of my pipes out of the way until I could wrangle the rest of my stuff, but as I've been working 60 hours a week almost nonstop since moving, I haven't had time until a couple of days ago to make the bulk of my pipes easily available. Consequently I only had the 5 pipes that weren't packed away at the time of the move, and I have smoked them much more often than I normally would.
For a while I smoked a pipe multiple times over multiple days before thoroughly cleaning and letting the poor things have a rest. None of them have suffered. I'm a very dry, very slow, smoker, so maybe that's why they didn't explode.
Since I have a fair collection, but by no means a large one, I smoke a rotation of 6 to 7 pipes for a few months, thoroughly clean them at the end, and put them away, sometimes for many months, before putting them back in rotation. I do think that a good long rest is beneficial after a thorough clean.

I just see them as tools. Smoke them, stick them in a cardboard box and smoke another for a while. They're really a lot harder to damage than people think.

It's true. I once moved a couple thousand miles, and my ex shipped me my beautiful pipe collection tossed into a cardboard box with no padding, and
they arrived in perfect condition! 😂

I understand that pain. I've been on an 84+hour week for several years now.
I just can't do that any more. I did have a period, for about a month, where I was working 7 days a week to keep this project from going off the rails just after it left the station. I was an angry SOM BESTHS (see the Secret Santa thread) at the end of it.
I got a nice birthday gift today when the show's producer wrote me to let me know that she did not want me working during the Holiday break, and to ensure that I didn't pushed back the start of the next episode by 3 days to give me time to take care of the administrative part of my job.

I'll be 50 in February and my body is starting to tell me to back off. Damn good money but I'm not 20 anymore.

I buy too many pipes. I also like to change my pipe for each smoke. For me that is part of the enjoyment. It just makes sense all around to rotate them. I would not hesitate to smoke more than one time but generally I only do If I am out and only have one pipe. Typically I wait until its dry to smoke it again. In the winter that is a few days. And like I said..with a growing collection its no problem. Next smoke is someone elses turn.

I ain't never worked hard in my life and I never will 😭
Hardly work, more documentation and troubleshooting. I write out work orders for engineers, do time studies, and test ergonomic applications. More hours than physical labor plus for the next two weeks every hour I work is double time and a half bringing my hourly pay to $170/hr for a 12 hour work day. I may have aches and pains, but I'm not complaining.

I wonder what percentage on this forum are collectors? If we define a collector to have more than, say, six pipes.

I have 45 pipes, mostly high grades (valued $250 to $1000 at current prices) including a few excellent estate pipes such as my dunhill size 4 root briar dated 1965.

I'm not a flame, nor even straight grain fanatic. I like dense grain. Gnarly is fine.

At 39 pipes, with no end in sight, I discovered the joys of filtered pipes. So I bought six good filtered pipes, which I figure is a good number to keep on the rack by my smoking chair.

I will occasionally smoke one of the "old" 39, but not often now. They remain in my pipe cabinet as beautiful museum pieces.
Some of them unsmoked!

I'm guessing my children will toss them in the rubbish without a thought. Along with my unopened tobacco tins from the early '90s. Ce la vie

Omg. 6 pipes. Im sunk! My collection is about the size you quote. I tend to buy estates so most average about 150. If they were all new…ouch! I keep thinking Im about done. Every time I think that I buy another lol. I suppose it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t harm my finances. Im semi retired and make more than I spend. I figure no harm, no foul. Unlike you mine are smoked. A new pipe is like an unopened Christmas present. It has to be smoked as soon as possible!

And yes…unless you leave good instructions they may well get tossed. When I left the US for europe I left a bunch with family. While not super valuable I am pretty sure they found the rubbish bin. Such is life. Enjoy them and move on.

Ive also got a box full of basket pipes from france (Im in France) that Ive cleaned up. I may put them up for sale here next month since Im not gonna smoke them all and I really dont know what to do with them. Maybe someone in europe will want some 20 dollar pipes. I got crazy and bought two big boxes of pipes because I wanted two of them lol.

I restore a few here and there for no real reason. Im one of those people who need to keep their hands busy.

Estate pipes are the smart buy. Firstly, they are reasonably priced. Secondly, they often feature older briar than can be found nowadays. And of course, they are already broken in!

But I do not mind breaking in a well seasoned briar. I enjoy the taste. For my money, in general, Italian is the way to go.

This is often the way; purchasing a large lot because it contains a few jewels.
