Medium sized bowl will last about an hour with ribbon cut or up to 90 min with a folded flake. I usually dump a little tobacco when I empty the bowl. I don't like the hot mess at the bottom.
I'll second that :puffpipe:

My last bowl, yesterday, lasted way longer than I wanted it to! It was around 40 degrees and the heater in my garage stopped working.

Well ... I guess you folks are the only ones that understand what I mean when I would say "I hardly have time for smoking now days". A friend of mine the other day asked me about my pipe habit, and I told him just that. He was very puzzled, him being a solely cigarette smoking, "how come you do not have time to smoke". Because it takes at least an hour for me to properly enjoy a pipe ... I keep around a few smaller bowls for a smoke on the go, but it's just not the same.

With a group 4 chamber, a folded flake, breath smoking and a couple of relights, it's very possible. I've never seen anyone smoke a pipe without a relight or two.
Then you haven't been in or viewed a slow smoking contest! :)
I have found I've completed a few bowls without relights, not on purpose; just happened. But under an hour.
I'd still like to see anyone make a bowl last two hours, though re-lights throw it into the grey zone.

I realized that, for some reason, I pace myself better with Latakia and Burley/Kentucky mixtures, usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I smoke Virginias much faster in general 30 to 45 minutes.

I always have at least a couple of re lights when smoking. I am always either reading a book or looking at the computer and my pipe will go out because I space. A folded and stuffed or cube cut flake or plug lasts me much longer than any other cut of tobacco. If I want a 3 hour smoke I will load up one of my group 6 or ODA sized pipes with flake or plug.

I agree that there are too many variables for timing a daily smoke. However, at the most recent long smoke competition I took part in - everyone smoked their own pipe and was given 2 grams of Red Cake - my smoke lasted 59 minutes. This was with a two match light with tamping allowed. My record is 1 hr., 27 minutes and change.
Sitting around the house this weekend, I decided to see if I could better the most recent time. I weighed and loaded 2 grams of Red Rapparee into the same pipe I smoked for the competition. Used two matches and smoked it for 1 hr. 15 minutes and 37 seconds.

I must be doing it wrong, but a medium-sized bowl lasts me about 30 to 45 minutes.

Sorry for the confusion. The two hour smokers here probably relight. There are zero relights in a slow smoke. I was just saying the tobacco is better at the one that I attend. Slow smokes are a lot of fun, but I would like to see more people who smoke for hours a pipe do these. I think they spend a lot of time unlit without realizing it.

Dense flakes such as Samuel Gawith flakes or Peterson's Irish Flake take forever to smoke. PPP maybe even longer. The slowest burning tobacco in my rotation is 1792 flake. I smoke it in a dedicated pipe, a Stanwell 63 shape. It is a dublin freehand shape and I guess it is a size 5, but these sizes are variable, so I'm not sure. I rarely finish a bowl of 1792 in less than 3 hours. Lots of relights, though.

My pipe for englishes is a diplomat, maybe a size 3, and a bowl of Nightcap lasts 1 to 1,5 hours. It's not like I try to drag my smokes out or anything. It's just the tobaccos I like the most are like this. And they can't be smoked faster, cause it turns them harsh, destroys the tongue and in the long run probably the pipe too.
