How far down do you smoke?

I mostly smoke to the bottom unless it's a wet aromatic that turns bitter at the bottom. I hate to waste tobacco.

Four months later, same position, I pretty much always smoke to the bottom, but will without qualm put a bowl out at any point.

If it's burning well, and it still tastes good, I keep smoking it. If not, I'm done.

Typically I smoke all the way to the bottom. Sometimes there's a little dottle left and other times hardly any. I very rarely will smoke a bowl, let it go out, and finish it later.

One thing that has changed in my pipe smoking is that I do more DGTing than I used to do. Fact is, I almost always dumped a bowl in years past if I hadn't finished it when I had to quit smoking for some reason. In the last year or so, I have found that many tobaccos can be quite pleasant after sitting for a while. And it pleases me that I'm not wasting tobacco.

Down as far as the blend lets me. Aromatics won't allow a re-light when there's only wet goop left.
Any good VA/Vaper tastes best at the very end. They yield just a wisp of dry white ash behind. Don't pull out on those too soon.

i did a search for stirring and found this thread
i have only been piping for less than 2 years and until recently i never stirred i only tampered

i guess i was afraid that i would cram it down into the outlet or break a pipe smoking rule or something
i never saw anyone on youtube stirring or read any discussion about stirring
i could almost never smoke to the bottom and would have a good bit of dottle left because it became harsh and too hot
usually it would take about an hour or so to smoke a bowl in my no name billiard

when i emptied the ash tray i would think about all that tobacco going bye bye
lately - i do not know why - i started stirring the bowl quite a bit - digging round the edges and busting up the compaction then tampering
that seems to keep it from holding so much moisture and i have been smoking to the bottom or very close quite often now
now a bowl last me more than 2 hours with very little waste

Till I taste ash. It depends on the blend. Usually there's just a pinch of dottle.
Gotta second smokey422. I've been DG smoking for the last year or so. Most blends hold their flavor pretty well for up to about 12 hours. I started doing it to save on throwing half bowls of tobacco out. It's worth it. Give it a try guys.
