Except for whatever is in current rotation, all of my pipes are put away in pipe cases, which are cases with internal fitments to hold a pipe, 17 to 21 pipe per case, as well as a churchwarden pipe case. The vintage cased pipes are in one of several boxes, with a bit of cushioning around the cases. Some of my less favored pipes are stored in socks in another box. Nothing is left on a rack, or in sunlight. I understand the impulse to display one's collection. It's just not good for the pipes. Interestingly, of the several major collectors I've visited, none of them display their pipes.

I do like those boxes.. however storing them is another thing.
I sort of do both display and put them away by keeping them in an enclosed wooden cabinet.

High priced mineral oil. It's used to form a barrier between the vulcanite and the oxygen in the air. I just coat my stems with Halcyon or Paragon wax.
same here.. I wondered what I was missing with "obsidian" oil because I know it didn't come from the rock. rotf

I haven't found anything better than Halcyon2 or Paragon waxes.

I have them ligned up in empty cigar boxes, which I get for free from B&Ms. These Boxes are in a closed dresser to keep them protected from any light.

Thats how they sit in the boxes:

I have all of my pipes in my living room. I have my 36 count Savinelli rack that has tinted glass and holes in the sides to let the pipes breath. On top of that rack sits a 12 count rack that was a gift from Mike at Briar Blues.
I also have a number of the round 6 count racks that hold my bigger pipes. Here is a pic of my set up.

So you would eat Halcyon and Paragon?
since it's wax and not in oil form I would figure ingestion is minimal... especially since your mouth is well below 180 degrees F.

if you wet something with oil and constantly put that item in your mouth the oil will surely come off.

My cats would have this stuff tumbling in minutes lol

Also if I kept that in our living room I would now be a eunuch.

Once the Obsidian (mineral oil) is on a stem for a while, you remove it with a soft cloth so there should be little to no ingestion. Then again, we are ingesting tobacco smoke.

true.. I am just skeptical of an oil on the stem. I feel it only masks problems.
same with the wax you are buffing off any that could be ingested with a soft cloth.

If the stem is truly free of oxidation before you wax it, it will stay that way for a VERY long time.

Not masking if no oxidation is present.

Bought for me in '92, this stem has neither been waxed nor sanded. Only oil and ChapStick have been applied after smoking.
