I mountain bike 3-5 times a week and hike pretty frequently as well. Other outdoor activities include downhill skiing (when in season, little known fact, the ski area in the US that is the furthest south is our local hill in Tucson, AZ) and golf. About a year ago I was about 30-40 pds overweight, and had almost equalled my heaviest weight. I could still drop friends on hikes, so I was in decent shape, but I really noticed my hips and knees hurting afterwards, especially on hikes with a lot of climbing/descending. Since then I got more regimented about my workouts, and shifted my approach to food (now I ask myself if I REALLY want something I don't need). I've lost a little over 30 pds since then. I was hoping to make it 40 pds before my 40th b-day, but I kind of plateaued at 32 pds lost and my b-day was in July. At some point I'll get a little more intense with the working out and lost the last 10 pds, but right now it just feels great to not be carrying around so much extra weight, not to mention that one of the most satisfyingly frustrating things in life is no longer being able to fit in half of my clothes.

Skied Lemmon back in the day as a wildcat. Climbed from it on bike multiple times it’s a beast. It wS way easier on my early forties at 190 and 200 than late forties at 230. Yikes! Mtn biked tanque Verde a bit too.

When I came here to go to grad school, I had two goals as a skier (knowing that Lemmon Ski Valley is only open for just a few days a year). The first was to ski powder in southern AZ. Accomplished this last winter. The other is ski and mountain bike on the same day. Haven’t done it yet, but I will sometime this winter, as long as we get some snow. A couple of years ago Ski Valley didn’t open at all, and with all the record heat here in AZ over the past few months I’m wondering what this winter will bring.

Growing up in Southern California, I have done the Surf in the morning, ski in the afternoon thing. It was awesome. Post college I worked in a bike shop for a year. Rode and commuted, surfed and skied. Then I had to grow out of it and moved to Phoenix. But, I do have a happy marriage and good career out of it.

Staying fit isn't as difficult as most people think. For starters, walking is a great exercise no matter how fit you already are. Lifting weights and lifting things is also a no brainier, but make sure you wear flat/level shoes, anything with too much under the heel messes up your posture.

And I would say half the battle of staying fit is eating right. I'll probably get booed for saying this, but we are not designed to eat grains and legumes and it doesn't make sense evolutionarily. Ive been keto/primal for over a year now and I will never go back. I am still surprised at the complete lack of carb cravings. Never felt better in my entire life, and it helped me slim down more than exercise did. Most of my carbs come from vegetables, with a small amount coming from berries and yogurt. If you're interested, check out the Keto Reset by Mark Sisson.

Sorry if that was preachy, it just really helped me.
I have been on keto for about a year now and I never felt better. Excess weight (20lbs) just melted off in a few months and I no longer crave carbs either. I can also go longer without feeling hungry between meals so no need to snack. I do time restricted eating with my first meal being lunch at noon and dinner at around 6.

When a lifestyle like this works so wonderfully, I tend to proselytize its benefits as well. I am leaner now than when I was a teenager. This diet combined with strength training works very well for me.

Dr Jason Fung‘s book “ The Obesity Code” was my introduction to understating how it works.

A recent book I highly recommend is “The Case for Keto” by Gary Taubes.

I really like Taubs! I think it’s time for me to try keto. I’ve done Atkins but got lazy. Recently started walking 1.5 miles a day since I’ve been a slug since retirement. Keep up the good work and thanks for the encouragement!
