My brother-in-law (of sorts) is Syrian, his parents are still there, and he says LahTAKia...I still say LadaKEYuh, but I'm a Midwesterner who feels like I'm caught between being a wrong dufus or a persnickety snob.

Yes, I know how it's supposed to be pronounced. I've seen the old commercials.

But how do YOU say it? "laTAkia" or "lataKIa"

I say it wrong, with the accent on the 2nd syllable. It's how I first read it, and the right way just seems wrong. I know I'm not the only one.

I pronounce it "Not that!" But am happy you all enjoy it nonetheless !
