Craig, most of those "news reporters" are British trained.
You know, the folk who say al-yoo-min-ium, instead of a-lu-min-um. Most respected dictionary sources seem to agree on lah-tah-kee-uh.
Sorry, Craig. ?

When you say British trained, do you mean trained to speak English by the English? Well they must be getting Aluminium right then! I got laughed at when I was living in Canada for how I say 'aluminium' and 'centrifugal' but thankfully neither word was needed at the timmie's drive thru.

When my friends got back from a trip through Syria years ago (pre war) the first thing I asked was how did the locals say Latakia when you visited? la TAH kia.

Amen.

I'm not understanding why are so many of you trying to pronounce a word most never utter in a lifetime, unless they're buying or selling the leaf. Where in the world, other than where I cited, do people speak about the leaf. I could understand pronouncing aloud, the location if one was reporting on the Israeli Air Force but, who else utters the term as it references tobacco cooking and the product? rotfYes blenders I understand and even a few buyers in a tobacconists but, most here buy and discuss via the interweb. I do not believe I have ever uttered the word aloud. While I am joshing a bit, I still grapple with the idea that people have occasion to actually utter the word.

Yes, I know how it's supposed to be pronounced. I've seen the old commercials.

But how do YOU say it? "laTAkia" or "lataKIa"

I say it wrong, with the accent on the 2nd syllable. It's how I first read it, and the right way just seems wrong. I know I'm not the only one.
I prefer the correct way: /latəˈkiːə/ (emPHASis on the KEY), which happens to be the UK pronunciation, according to Wiktionary.

How does the OED say it is to be pronounced? Brits, please, some assistance. I simply don't trust any thing that starts with "wiki" and such.
According to the OED (1971 edition) Section L, page 88:
lætǎkī ∙ ǎ
(notice the accent on the penultimate syllable)

I am going to say "luh-TAH-kia" for no reason I think. Remind me more of a Japanese word with that accent.
