The only way distinguishable pronunciation is established is by hearing it in presentations or conversation. Autodidacts (people who do most of their learning on their own) frequently have outlandish pronunciations because they do it all phonetically from reading. I think most pipe lore, likewise, is gained from reading. Folks who go to pipe shows and hang around pipe shops have that distinct advantage, if their crowd happens to be well informed.
