Honey, jelly, or sugar water, will build up a cake, but that cake is said to be less solid. So I go for a milder version. I have a little dropper bottle of half honey, half water and I will put drops in bad spots in a bowl and then rub the ashes around after smoking. A couple drops go in the bottom of a new cob. I have found that the MM hardwoods need all the help they can get building a cake initially as well, so they actually might get a coating.
