I define seconds fairly strictly. Rossi, though owned by Savinelli, are not seconds, just a brand owned by Sav. House pipes aren't seconds, they're sourced from known brands usually. And Nordings low end pipes aren't seconds, just lower-priced pipes. So the only legitimate seconds I have are from an era where Savinelli sold unfinished pipes as seconds, unstamped. In more recent years, I believe they sell these as "firsts," stamped with their name. But the seconds were sometimes basket pipes in my local independent pipe shop, and I think for a while this area was a Sav distribution hub, so there were quite a few around. They smoked like full-fledged Sav's, and over decades have colored in amazing ways, not just darkened and turned a golden walnut color, but developed a deep resonant polish, with no wax or polish ever. i have more recent versions in the process of coloring.
I agree. My House Pipe in OP was a reference to the Pete size chart not a store brand. I was going to include a Savinelli Private Label 614 which I was lead to believe was sold by Savinelli as a second but when I checked it, it had the Savinelli logo, 614 size and Italy stamped on it so i excluded it. I also have a Comoy's London Pride which merely says London Pride (but not Comoy's) and as I bought it off the Comoy's wall I consider it a first not a second.

Title edited: no all caps! And I have no truck with however a person views his pipes. Nice illustrations!

Someone once asked: ‘If they don’t have a name [brand] on them what good are they ?

Well, that’s easy to answer … in most cases they are perfectly good for what a pipe is designed to do: smoke tobacco. And they can do that as well as the most expensive top of the line pipe. And in my opinion with all of the money saved they are perfectly good at smoking: BULK tobacco … you know … tobacco that may not have made the standard of Name Brand tobacco and sells for much less ?!!!

1980s Erica System Reject House Pipe - (22mmx52+mm chamber) bought new with 302 below in early eighties = almost 40 years old. (Flaws: fill inside bowl at rim and crack on rim; left side of shank has been scored flat and finished)

1990s Irish Second XL339S (rare with saddle stem)(19mmx38mm chamber) If it was rare as a full production pipe, is it rarer as a Second ? (Flaw - the only thing I have found so far is a tiny pliar mark on the right side.) This pipe was purchased new by my brother in the 90's as a basket pipe. I recently traded a Savinelli Erica Fiamma 128 straight Billiard for it and am happy with the trade. This pipe has been cleaned to remove 30 yrs of Balkan Sobrani ghosts and the rim char was sanded off to get to original finish. It has very open draw - more than a cob, and is the only one to produce a lot of condensation which must be flicked out at least twice while smoking ! The stem is slightly loose for easy removal to do that. The other two do not produce anywhere near the amount of condensation. I do not clench but this would be the pipe to clench is one chose to clench.

Update: After reviewing Peterson Pipe Notes, I believe my Erica House pipe to now be a second of the XXL Hand Made based on size, shape, shank angle and end, and approximate date of purchase. Its still a guess but a more confident guess.

Here's a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Original next to its Irish Seconds twin. While one has a P-lip and the other doesn't, I couldn't otherwise identify any difference in the smoking experience. I've owned perhaps a couple of dozen Irish Seconds over the years.

Savinelli also made seconds: natural-finished pipes with huge putty fills. I had a Zulu shape many years ago that I traveled with everywhere for a while. Once I began smoking it I noticed a distinct peppery taste to the tobacco. I realized there was a putty fill the size of my thumbnail inside the bowl. But with a layer of cake, it was just fine.

Seconds are a great value.

Another category of seconds I like buying are damaged, or shopworn pipes, also called demonstrators.

This Lorenzetti Bruyere Extra Smooth Bent Brandy Saddle Stem 9mm filter pipe is on its way from Serbia to Humansville for $44 delivered.

I strip every one anyway, and this one needs it.

When I saw the graphic on the stem of this pipe, I thought it was Alfred Hitchcock's self-portrait:

I was under the impression that many "seconds" were pipes that just didn't meet the quality criteria of the brand. Sometimes it was just a pit in the briar and had nothing to do with the smoking quality of the pipe.
True for the most part although nowadays some brands have second lines that are a lesser (not top of line) quality of briar.

Irish Seconds Smooth Bent Billiard with Silver Army Mount P-Lip aka a Peterson oak pub pipe with a defect. The defect isn't that it stands; that's clearly intentional. It's that there's a blockage in the draft hole that makes drawing on the empty bowl feel like you're trying to drink freshly mixed concrete out of a kids straw.

In the case of Comoy the Selected Straight Grain and Straight Grain designations were for pipes that were marked for their top of the line "Supreme Grain" pipes but had been found wanting. Often because of a small blemish.
The ones I have have far superior grain to the much vaunted (and far more pricey) Blue Riband in my possession.
