After everything I've done to myself that either could have killed me in short order or permanently damaged my body and brain, pipe smoking weighs in a little light!

This is another thread where one of my posts are missing. I actually made the calculations and posted them here. This has been happening quite a bit lately for some reason. I think the results were something like 42% addiction and 58% hobby.

I'm addicted to nicotine, but my pipes are also a hobby. That's what differentiates pipe smoking from cigarette smoking, in my opinion -- one can plausibly be a hobby, but I have a hard time envisioning a cigarette hobbyist.
Thanks for this thread, BTW -- after some of the discussions on other threads recently, I had kind of wondered what a survey like this might reveal. I'd also love to see an age breakdown, as well, as my pet theory is that younger pipe smokers are more likely to consider themselves hobbyists while older smokers are more likely to call themselves addicts.

I see it as a hobby more than an addiction. Im hooked on nails right now and im trying to get off em before it gets too bad. With my pipe I could quit smoking them if I wanted to or needed to but it's a great time collecting and sharing a smoke with other people.

maybe a bit of both... I still smoke the nails but significantly less than before I picked up my first briar... of course smoke breaks at work are now pipe time so I'm getting less nic smoking a pipe of good baccy over three or four cigs in 20 minutes...cigs are for when I need the fix and don't have time for a good pipe...but then the pipe is filled and lit wherever I can smoke for extended periods of time without violate laws and ordinances. I also suffer from the need something for my hands and jaw to do syndrome so sometimes I find myself clenching an unlit pipe in my teeth just as a comfort thing at my desk...yeah screw that it's an addiction that lets me collect awesome pipes and tobaccoes

I am addicted to tobacco, buying pipes, buying tobacco, everything to do with this hobby. I figure if you are going to do it, do it like a junkie. lol
