This is actually one of my questions -- what exactly is a codger blend? I've gathered that they are the inexpensive bulk tobacco commonly available... I was looking at Borkum Riff because I want to try a straight cavendish. Would this be a codger?
A codger blend is a tobacco blend that has been around for a long time and smoked by our fathers and grandfathers. They were mostly over the counter blends because that was what was mostly available to most people. They are mostly burley forward blends and are uncomplicated but with good taste. The only tobacco that I have ever thrown away in 43 years of smoking was Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey, but don't let me influence your choices.

Welcome from Canada! As someone who is a month and a half into pipe smoking myself (coming from two decades of occasional cigars), I totally get everything about pipes that you mentioned!

Yes, i am from New Jersey: North Jersey, Sussex County man, Bergen County, East Rutherford, Ocean County, Point Pleasant, but don’t ask me what exit I’m from ‘cause only non-Jersey folk ask that. I did escape from NewJersey, however, and now am trapped in Florida (can’t afford to go back), but that’s a long story. I am looking forward to a lot of good times at the PipesMagazine outfit. It’s getting to be a rare thing anymore to find people who enjoy good pipes and good tobacco. Pre-9/11 I used to frequent the BarlayRex pipe shop in lower Manhattan. I loved its old timey New York atmosphere and got to know the father and son who ran it.
