A significant problem with your plan is the number of blends that may be recommended that won't be available. I'd say 75% of the most popular Virginia Flakes are out of stock at this time. Obviously, the Germaine/Esoterica blends will be out of stock. There are all the small batch releases that are not in stock. Kind of an exercise in futility. I'll recommend some things that normally are in stock.

Virginia - Union Square, Opening Night, Yorktown, HH Pure Virginia, MB Vanilla Roll Cake, Newminster 400, Orlik Golden Sliced, Vauen No 14, Rattray Old Gowrie, Capstan Blue

Seattle Pipe Club - Mississippi River Special Reserve and Plum Pudding Special Reserve.

Mac Baren - (previously recommended a couple of MB Virginia blends) - Latakia Flake, Burley Flake, Dark Twist, Rustica, Golden Extra, Bold Kentucky, Old Dark Fired, Original Choice.

C&D Bijou

Savinelli Brunello Flake

Watch City Persian Slipper, Deluxe Crunb Cut, Watch City Slices, Old Dominion (note, you'll have to buy these from Watch City directly but we'll worth it)

I think you'll be able to find most of not all of those. I'd recommend Smoking Pipes or Tobacco Pipes. There are numerous other blends I'd recommend but only come available 3 or 4 times per year. Good luck with your quest.

So what I hear you are saying that you want a super shallow but wide cellar and not seeking to get the best value for your $ and go deep on a few tried and true faves? Is this your one and only $1000 dollar excursion, or just your first one?

If you are looking to sock away as much good tobacco as you can with some variety for your $1000, I second Embers' plan:

Latakia-Balkan Supreme
Virginia-Newminster Superior Navy Flake
VaBur-Newmister Superior Round Slices
VaPer-Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake
VaOr-Oriental Silk
Burley-Pegasus

This lets you smoke the LNF while the Newminster gets the year it needs to really blossom as a tobacco. I can't speak to Pegasus as the burley, though.

The sidenote to this plan is you need smallish jars, and a lot of them to jar up the tobacco.

If you are going wide, not deep, spend some time on tobacco reviews. But here is my cellar as of 8 months ago or so:
Tobacco Cellar Wyfbane's summary pipe tobacco aging cellar - http://tobaccocellar.com/Wyfbane

I like anything in there. Some of it is now unavailable, but the available stuff is still good.

This. If you want to quickly fill a cellar, this is the way to go. Buy five pounds of each of these and you'll be well on your way.

Latakia-Balkan Supreme
Virginia-Newminster Superior Navy Flake
VaBur-Newmister Superior Round Slices
VaPer-Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake
VaOr-Oriental Silk
Burley-Pegasus
That's a solid list.

Buy 1000lbs of prince Albert. You only need one blend or your not a real pipe smoker

Said no one ever

One of the most exciting things for me with pipe smoking has been getting my hands on as many different types of blends as possible and seeing what I like and comparing how they match up to each other. Like many others have said though you might want to buy small quantities first to sample. Maybe even make a pipe smoking journal. Don't be too quick to jump head first into laying down big money on blends that haven't been tested and proved worth stocking up on. I myself have almost 40 blends open right now but honestly have only five or 6 that I continue to buy over and over and over. Hopes this helps.
Agreed.

Currently, I am buying wide to deter generes and blends I like. I have about 40 blends open as well.

The next step is to cellar deep with those blends I enjoy most.

I wouldn't want to be just starting out right bnow, especially if you haven't had a few years to explore and find out what you like. Even then, my likes and preferences change. I have liked, hated, then re-liked, hated, and now like again latakia, ha ha.
I'm not going to talk you into anything, but you've got the right idea... buy lots!!!

What’s the purpose of sticking to 2oz tins?

If I liked everything with no favorites and just wanted to pack my cellar, I’d be buying bulk all day, every day.

I used to think that way, but these days, I like the ease of 2 oz. tins. I like the tins themselves, I like the ease of storage, I like that they will be easier to trade or sell down the line if I want to, I find them convenient to set on the table as I pack my pipe over them, and so on. I only buy bulk when the blend is not available in tins. Granted, bulk is cheaper. Just after a certain point, depending on your feelings on these issues, bulk can be a pain in the ass.

You can see mold growth in a jar but not in a tin or a bag.

I've been smoking a pipe for around ten years and have never had any mold grow on any of my pipe tobacco, whether in jars, tins, or neglected sitting in a ziploc bag.

I am an admitted C&D and GLP fanboy. All of their blends are available in tins (I have never had any mold issues - I think that was earlier on).
C&D have amazing burley blends - Pegasus, Burley Flake 1,2,3 etc., Kelly's Coin
GLP has amazing English blends - Quiet Nights
They both have good Va and Vapers too. (Billy Budd Blonds)

Smokingpipes.com is the place! Great service and fast shipping.

Sounds like your on the right track. There are blends that really surprised me like war horse green. I hate black licorice but love the black licorice taste in war horse green. I for the most part know what I like and don't like but I try to be open to different things. Except stuff that taste like candy corn ???

As someone living in the post-tobapocalypse wasteland of the South Pacific, I find threads like this fascinating. I agree with the lads who say go bulk. Honestly if you don’t have a solid base to build your cellar on, or only smoke once a week, or a pound of tobacco will be sufficient to last the rest of your life, you should spend a decent chunk of that grand on bulk - remember if the new federal tax hike comes into play, paying an extra few bucks for a tin here and there won’t make a difference, but and extra $50 per pound of bulk would use up half of your budget.

I second (or third or whatever number it’s up to) the stokkebye and newminster flakes/coins. Watchcity slices and 558 are exceptional. And if you are using P&C please buy a shit tonne of PS312 toasted burley. Also D&R have an excellent range. It’s all of this stuff I miss having access too.

I also accept that sealed tins will hold their trade value, and opening them provides a bit of magic for those of us who don’t smoke as regularly. If I were sticking to tins I would be going for less variety and purchasing 5 of each (or one 2oz for sampling and then an 8oz tin or 16oz bag to cellar).

I’d look at Macbarens 100g range, Seattle pipe clubs plum puddings, st Bruno, pretty much everything that’s been suggested so far.

Also check out the forum’s sales section. You could easily spend your budget there too.

Looking forward to seeing what you choose…actually, I recant all of the above. My vote is you get completely drunk and just go trigger happy at one website. Forget about what reviews say. Base it all on the blends’ names and tin art.

I have cases of 1/2 pint jars stacked up in the basement, out of sight and out of mind in their original boxes. When I get anything 8oz. Or higher I break it down into 2oz portions and fill the jars. Then back away they go.

There’s no convenience factor of a tin for me as everything other than currently smoking blends are away in the dark. That’s why I try to buy the largest quantity available of something in stocking up on. It’s just going into jars anyway.

I'm not even sure what I'm going to choose at this point.
I have 2 carts fully built right now.

One is about 113 cans of only 5 things (couple things I wanted and some suggestions here)

The 2nd is like 62 complete different things making up the same budget. some duplicates (chosen mostly by Names/Tin art)

I think I'm going to try to make a 3rd cart that's a little more in the middle and see what that looks like before i pull the trigger on this.

For some clarity because it was mentioned. I have about 7years worth cellared as of this moment. was able to do that for relatively cheap and quite quickly surprisingly.
And no matter which direction I go with this purchase whether I buy it all and just store it immediately or sample everything. It will math out to about another 4-6 years. it's not like I'm flashing around money but this isn't "My wad" as was mentioned in a previous comment. And I guess I should have reworded the title. I want help filling my cellar.
not help creating a cellar from scratch. after this purchase I'm still going to also be making my "regular" tobacco purchases.
This was supposed to be a Cellaring purchase but more importantly something FUN to do for myself. something else to throw my hard earned hobby money at.

Thank you for your answer (And everyone else too) this reply wasn't just targeted at you even though I quoted you i figured id use it to clarify a few things even further.

Buy a pound of every Bulk available.
Relatively speaking there aren't that many, which is probably for the best because there's usually a lot of overlap between blends, and when you find one you really like you automatically know it's available in any quantity you want.

I would say buying 1oz baggies of bulk tobacco is a great way to try a ton of blends for low cost. If you end up not liking one, you’re only out a couple bucks as opposed to spending $10+ on a tin. If you do find you like the bulk blend, you can then stock up on a future order.

I would hold off till a sale. Save yourself some coin. There’s always Black Friday week deals, and SP does a twelve days of Christmas sales: usually 1/2 are pipes, 1/4 accessories, and last 1/4 tobacco.
Right now SP has Sutliff Crumble Kake tins 20% off.
Tobaccopipes.com hasMacBaren 15% off.
