Help dating and analyzing this 4103 Dunhill bamboo

Yes, and his "opinion" that he hasn't seen any other Dunhill pipes with bamboo shanks" is not an "opinion", an opinion is "I like Chevys more than Fords". For Chrissakes, there are a thousand Dunhill catalogs online that show bamboo shanked pipes, it's not a secret.

If you don't know, say you don't know, or say nothing at all, it'll serve you well far beyond the online pipe smoking community.

a simple Google search for 'dunhill bamboo pipes' comes up with "About 1,290,000 results (0.39 seconds)" a search for 4103 dunhill bamboo comes up with "About 1,720,000 results (0.27 seconds)" I haven't seen a lot of things that I know exist.

That ugly whangee sure looks lonely huh? I don't know if the price is right but I kinda want to see it in person to know if it does have a date code.

My opinion is, that particular Dunhill is not a good pipe to buy because of the over reaming and the out of round bowl. In my opinion it will smoke very hot. The front of the bowl looks so thin that a burnout is quite possible. I think you were smart not to buy it. There is nothing worse to me than an over reamed pipe that is out of round, total deal breaker in my book. You are much better served by saving the extra hundred or so and buying a high quality estate Dunhill.

You two "experts" made me chuckle, so thanks for that. That pipe, original, repaired, or whatever, was one piece of crap. The aggressive over-reaming alone (BTW, you don't have to be an "Dunhill expert" to see that) make it a pipe to stay the hell away from. I'm pleased the OP opted out -- there are much better values out there.

I'm not sure what leads you to call this pipe a piece of crap. My hunch would be that this "aggressive over reaming", along with the beautiful patina on that bamboo, took place over a twenty to forty year period, a long time for someone to smoke a lousy pipe, no?
As far as the thinned wall, hell, I have Holbeks and a Sven Knudsen with thinner walls originally than what that Dunhill was reamed out to.
As far as value is concerned, of course, this is probably not the best value out there. Lord only knows what each of us considers "value" when it comes to an indulgent hobby like pipe smoking, but suffice it to say, lots of people, myself included,, would grab that pipe in a New York minute for that price.

For some perspective, here is a unsmoked 1961 Dunhill Wangee Shell Bamboo pipe. '61 is my birthyear, so I've seen this one go up for auction more than once by Mr. Can. I think his last price was around $800 but dropped to $565 this time around.
