Hey from central North Carolina. My grandparents used to own a little sandy soil farm in Holton, northeast of Muskegon. I camped there while the little farmhouse was still standing -- no running water or electricity. My grandma liked the pioneering aspect of it, though it was prodigious work. They summered there in the 1920's and 30's, though my grandpa had to take the boat across the lake for the work week. They had an old horse named Bill they boarded the rest of the year with a neighbor. He pulled the wagon to town until they got a old car. Bill would stop at the bottom of the hill and wait until he had strength to climb, but he always did. When I camped there, an elderly widow invited my friend and I up to her house for pie and cold milk, and raised her finger for us to listen to the chuck will's widow (bird) in the field outside at dusk.
