S.A., my family vacationed at Lake Geneva at a place called College Camp, affiliated with George Williams College in Illinois. It was a sort of summer camp for families instead of just kids. I believe it is long closed as a resort, but now serves as a meeting venue.
It was fun as a resort because it combined some tent accommodations, big walk-in canvas tens with wooden bases above the ground and curtains between sleeping areas, and kerosene lamps, with shower and toilets up the hill in a large facility. They also offered some hotel type units, but our family always did tents.
But instead of camping food, they had a lovely white table cloth dining room with great food in abundance. Most of the employees were college kids on their summer breaks doing internships. They did everything from waiting tables, to arts and crafts, life guarding, boat rentals, etc. There were also commercial tour boats that did around the lake tours as well as passenger service and mail delivery including to the many elaborate estates along the shoreline.
It was quite a deal in the 1950's, and I regret it isn't still there. People want their drinks with supper and TV, so its time was over.
