While living in Sofia I was able to order small amounts from Germany. There are a couple of places downtown where you can find a small selection of tobacco, but you’re probably aware of that already.

Yes I have seen the site but never managed to find the time to go meet him. And for now I'm sticking to cheaper pipes. I wouldn't buy a handcrafted unique pipe knowing that I might destroy it and all the person's effort would be gone.

I tried ordering from Germany, but even the sites wouldn't allow me to do it once I enter my address.
What I did was find a colleague working there and ordered on his address. Now I just have to meet him and take it next month. Really looking forward to trying Peterson Early Morning Pipe and Samuel Gawith Pipe Tobacco Navy Flake.
As to shops in Sofia, only Rattray's Flake I found that I liked, and I'm still a noob with Flakes...

Sometimes pipes break but they're pretty tough; one of mine has taken some adventurous tumbles and only has some scratches.

not that big of an issue. I have never burnt a rim I've had some dark rims that look burnt but clean up perfectly and easily. And the only people I know who hurt a pipe by smoking too hot really smoked about as hot as possible. That said don't buy an expensive pipe until you feel comfortable with it. I had one that cost a bit more and I couldn't smoke it because I couldn't relax. Sold to a member here and love when they share pics of them enjoying it.

Hi! I lived I Bulgaria for 14 years off and on. I was mostly based near Stara Zagora and Kazanluk but also spent time in Samakov. We are just working on opening a new distributor line in Bulgaria so hopefully will be able to progress that in the next couple of months and start getting Gawith tobacco back into the market there. It used to be sold there but the former distributor then went very quiet. Interested to hear about the pipe maker there. I maybe over that way later in the year. Still got a couple of land plots I need to sell and a few things to sort out and friends still live there. All my dogs are Bulgarian rescue dogs! Rachel

Burning or charring the rim takes some real effort. Most of what people who call it that are really talking about lava, gunk or whatever. Char is real, though, and is nasty.

Wet the rim with a little saliva before you light your pipe.
It will protect from burns and lava.
