It's hard to believe but this was 65 years ago. Key West was totally different from now. It was a large navy base and the Navy basically controlled everything. I used walk around at midnight and I was safe as if I was in my mother's arms.

Key West is a very different place nowadays. They like to market themselves as a wilder, not necessarily kid friendly, party town. Lots of folks like it. It's got some nice historic places, and the waters and reefs are quite beautiful. IMO other than the bit of history, there's much to see in the FL keys without having to drive all the way down to Conch. A very worthwhile trip from Key West is visiting Dry Tortugas, specially with snorkeling gear. Dry Tortugas National Park (U.S. National Park Service) - https://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm

Hello There,

After a three-decade hiatus got back into the hobby. Nowadays enjoying the taste, aromas, and relaxing moments with my pipe. Regretfully its seems nobody around here seems to smoke pipes anymore; kinda lonely hobby to partake in. Very much liking the forums though. LookingI
Welcome from New Mexico. Pipe smoking is a dying hobby for sure. I haven't run into anyone smoking a pipe in years. And with tobacco being looked down on nowadays I don't smoke mine anywhere other than my home.

OldRocko, I got here when N.C. said tobacco was king, and it is still a major cash crop, but not like then. The big auction barns where the farmers used to sell their crop are mostly gone, along with the fall festival that went with them. Cotton, soy beans, and other crops have taken over a lot of what used to be tobacco fields. Most of the tobacco farmers sell under contract to the big companies. Research Triangle Park, big pharma, Charlotte's banking industry, and now a major Toyota plant are major businesses and industries.
