Hello, I'm a new pipe smoker, having started in March 2021. I had tried taking it up long ago but didn't stick with it. I've since learned what I needed to know back then, thanks to YouTube and internet forums.

I live in the state of Minnesota, USA. Here is a list of things I like:
  • My favorite pipe shape is a bent bulldog, of which I have several.
  • My current favorite pipes are my Rattray number 6 pipes that are no longer produced.
  • I prefer to smoke with 9mm charcoal filters.
  • I prefer Virginia based blends as burley doesn't seem to agree with me so I keep it minimized.
  • I also like English blends unless they go very heavy with the burley.
  • My favorite blend of the moment is Watch City Cigar Flake #558.
  • My current mania is to find a Rattray's Old Gowrie, number 6 pipe as it is the only number 6 I don't have.

Hello from Southwestern Wisconsin’s Coulee Region! If you’re in the MSP area be sure to check out the Great Northern Pipe Club. They’re a really good group!

I used to be a straight up Virginia man, but as my tastes progressed, I found that I really love burley, just not that OTC crap people keep calling burley.
I get mouth irritation from burleys. The higher percentage of burley, the greater the irritation. For example, HH Burley Flake is brutal. Virginias and Orientals don't cause any problem. I like burleys, I just can't smoke heavy burley blends for very long before it gets irritating.

@DoingItWrong there's nothing wrong with YouTube and forums but there's nothing quite like hands on learning technique and swapping tobacco samples in a meeting of like minded people. I know of at least two pipe clubs in the Twin Cities: the Great Northern, and the Pig's Eye. If it's not prohibitively far I'd recommend you seek them (both) out and perhaps see if either or both strike your fancy.

Doing- welcome! I hope you don't live up to your handle!

Please put your location in your Profile, as people are forgetful.
Why:
That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc. In many instances that saves time for those who read your posts.
How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. Just country if you must.
