Hello Everybody

I'm new here & have been browsing this forum as well as others. Impressive camaraderie to say the least. It's a pleasure to join such an open respectful & helpful community. I'm back to the pipe at middle age after too many years away. Starting back smarter & more relaxed. The wealth of information & advice from members makes a great daily read. I've always known in the back of my mind that I'd take up pipe again. It's more than a pastime or hobby. It's a part of life that's a way of life, really. I'm blessed to recently have acquired a startup collection of quality estate pipes, tobacco, and airtight glass jars. First question: has anyone her carved their own Hard Maple or Ash pipe? Thanks

Welcome! I started carving pipes using maple to learn how to do traditional shapes on the lathe without ruining a bunch of briar. When I finally got a shape down I would move to a briar block. I have smoked a few of the maple trail parts and they don't smoke that great. Maple has a distinctive taste. Ash wouldn't taste very good either I don't think. If you want to try to carve a pipe that smokes sweet get yourself some Cherrywood or Apple. Most fruit tree's will work. I have heard Morta is fossilized maple but havent tried it yet. Good luck with your new hobby. Ask lot's of questions there is a wealth of information with the gentlemen that frequent this site.
