Like most, when I was younger, pizza was a staple in my diet, and I didn't worry much about what went in, as much as how much exercise I was getting. If I started getting a little pudgy, I just ran an extra mile a day.
But, as I get older, that standard doesn't work.
Things my grandfather said to me starts to ring more true. Such as, breads and pastas are overly processed foods that gunk up our systems. I don't avoid carbs as much as I am just picky about what carbs I eat. I prefer things grown in my yard, as opposed to things I can buy in a box or bag and make. So we eat lots of meats and vegies and fruits. We get enough carbs from that, so that we don't have to eat much bread or pastas. But, we do eat rice and cornbread. Corn bread is about the least processed bread. In fact, I just grow the corn and have it ground for us into meal and grits.
I used to have a thig about having to have greens with every meal. If I went a couple of dinners without greens, I started worrying about scurvy, ha ha. And, although I know this to not be true, I still love fresh greens year round. I just don't worry about scurvy. I keep several beds in the yard planted year round with cabbage, kale, collards, spinach, and lettuces... and chards stay green year round, so that even if it snows, I can still pick some fresh for a balanced dinner. Lettuce, we eat the least. I prefer them mixed as new greens, blended for flavor, so I grow a lot of mesclun blends. In a way it is a lot like blending tobaccos for flavor.
But, we still exercise. Walking, swimming, biking, and yardwork.
