At the minimum I'd say you have to listen to your body. It will often give you warning signs along the way to something more serious. I started pipe smoking 2 years ago, about one bowl a day. So far I haven't experienced any raise in blood pressure, coughing, sore throat, a weakened immune system, or a limp dick.

For the purposes of sharing some general (or generalized) information about pipe smoking, this very current article synthesizes the very limited empirical research on pipe smokers since the frequently cited Surgeon General's report from the 1960s: The Hazards of Using Pipe Tobacco.

To answer the question from a totally personal point of view, I can't say I've noticed any negative effects of smoking a pipe since my mid-teens. I can't say I've smoked pipes steadily: Sometimes I smoke 1-3 bowls a day, and sometimes I don't smoke even one. I've abstained from smoking for weeks and even months at a time. I'd definitely consider myself a moderate consumer of pipe tobacco.

That said, the minor health troubles that have come up in middle age don't seem to have much, if anything, to do with pipes. I wouldn't call myself an athlete, but I've been an active swimmer (sometimes runner) through my life, and I've never noticed any trouble with breathing or chest capacity. I'm disciplined about dental hygiene and never even had a dentist or hygienist ask if I used tobacco. No real medical trouble connected to my pipe hobby at all (so far).

Of course, whether and how smoking pipe tobacco affects us is highly individual because the effects depend on so many factors.

That's a strange article, full of generalizations. I'm not totally sure on the point of it, other than trying to make a non-neutral case for stopping. It just barely glosses on a few early descriptions and then starts throwing numbers together.

That's the study I read and turned the green light on for my tobacco pipe smoking. But then again...I just wanted to start.

I thought so, too. The thing that stood out to me about the article is that it cites the VERY few, recent empirical studies that explicitly featured pipe smoking patterns. I've casually looked for one or two of the primary sources and haven't had any success yet. It's very easy to interpret quantitative data to support a bias by simply omitting crucial contextual information about things like population sampling, etc.

I can’t think of anything that is without risks. Even laying in the couch, covered in a warm blanket, eating Gold Fish crackers could lead to death.
So true! ;-) How about the recent hysteria over the dangers of sitting at our desks in front of our computer screens - worse than smoking! Maybe I'll start smoking my pipe while I work in front of a stand-up desk ...

When I was 20 the dentist told me I should quit smoking as my teeth were stained and I had never smoked in my life. It was black tea I had been drinking since I was 16!

After reading all these posts I reckon if we all got together at the pub it would be an epic evening out. ?
For sure! :)

They basically called all pipe tobacco Kentucky Fire cured, low in sugar and high in nicotine.

Right off the bat, the article seems to base most of its calculations that all pipe tobacco is seemingly fire cured Kentucky with low sugar and nigh nicotine. It then proceeds to do calculations off of that statement which makes no sense.

I couldn't care less if pipe smoking kills me. I have to die of something, I would rather it be of something I love to do. I am 63 and know I will die of something fairly soon but I am not going to give up my pipes. as I don't drink. I don't do drugs anymore and pipe smoking is the worst thing I do . If pipe smoking kills me in the next ten to 15 years so be it. This quote is what I live by and I don't worry about anything any more.
"

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”

With the way people are willingly getting jabbed with spike protein therapy(not judging) and cellphone 5g towers popping up everywhere(they are I see them in new spots daily) I honestly don’t think about the future and of my health in the distance. Who knows!? I only hope we don’t suffer
