A good friend, who also enjoys a good smoke, gave me a gift recently that he picked up at an antique store. It touches on two of my interests: Horses and Pipes.....

The pipe holder is a cavalry stirrup mounted on a wooden base. Very cool...

The pipe itself is an old "Storm King" pipe which is a brand that I am not familiar with. It is a billiard shape with a wind cap. It has seen considerable use but overall is in good shape. Please see in the pictures below for more detail.

I do see the name of the brand "Storm King" and then on the stem there is an image of a small crown. On the other side the shank says, "Century Old" imported briar.

I am not familiar with this brand and if anyone knows anything about it, I would appreciate it if you would share your knowledge.

Wally Frank.

Well, that was the wildest thing I have seen in a while. I may have to go back and look at it a few more times to understand it. My storm king is just a billiard style pipe, unlike that freakish looking thing.

thanks for the info.

Yes, I know but now you know it was imported by Wally Frank. Ashdigger's is from the 30s ... I suspect your is from the 50s or 60s ... a later model in the same series. "Century Old" Imported briar is interesting as well. That name was used by Lorenzo but his said Italy as well. It was also used by a french maker and one english maker. You can research that as well but it may prove hard to nail down specifically without a COM stamp. Given its a traditional billiard I would suspect english or french. I'm no expert and only did a quick search. But storm King was a Wally Frank series. Not much info on Pipephll and pipedia though. You may have to check other forums to see what others say about theirs to gather more info. Good Luck in solving the mystery and history ... thats the fun part of collecting besides smoking them !! Also Rebornpipes.com has refurbished a few and might have some research on them. The stirrup stand is a fine piece too !

Thanks for all of the nice comments.

I especially appreciate your info, @Hillcrest on the Storm King pipes. I have looked at my billiard much closer and I do see the tiny word "Italy" inscribed. So, perhaps this had a tie to Lorenzo.

Gotta do more research. Thanks.

I have one tiny Lorenzo Opera pipe 16mmx25mm chamber. I believe they are hand made in Naples, Italy. Fine pipes.

The Storm King design with the integral cap/cover is a pretty cool design. Several brands made similar pipes.
I've seen a few in person over the years. If you can find one with nice grain, they're actually pretty nice pipes.

Just to be clear.... when you say "integral cap/cover" do you mean the metal cap like my billiard has or are you referring to the enclosed wooden ones that were shown in the link above that @Hillcrest provided?
