ash', yes I believe five pounds is on the verge of tobacco famine. About that time, you have to start digging through trash cans for discarded cigar butts and cig ends.

I remember occasionally running out of cigarettes at the worst possible times back when I was a cigarette smoker. Sharing my smokes with others was almost always the cause. It's basically impossible for me to run out of tobacco these days. I understand the original questions is probably more about running out over a period of time, rather than running out suddenly, but I have to say that I greatly appreciate having the knowledge that I'm well-stocked for the short term, even if I still would like to add to my cellar for the long term.

I don't plan on running out. The plan is to cut it close though.

folanator, nope, doesn't count. Running out while traveling is just not bringing enough from your stash at home. Likewise with a move, the stash hasn't arrived yet. I'm talking about being out, as in, you don't own any at all, at home, in your car, where you live and work. So far, no one can claim that, not even those of us who'd quit smoking at some point. So the thread goes on.

I must have 40 years ago. Living BF Idaho. But, the trauma was severe. I have blacked out the whole event. Thanks to this assemblage I have a 20 year supply hidden away. Enough to make it to my 96th birthday.
