Put a regular 4 pipe pouch in a really oldschool lunchbox? That's pretty cheap!

Photoman: I fly a lot... I never put my pipes in the suitcase, always in my carry-on. A good soft pipe bag is what I use and have not had a broken pipe (yet... Knock on wood briar)

I'm a little paranoid, Mick. I figured if I can put my mind at ease for 20 bucks it's worth it.

Don't get me wrong... I check luggage..but not the pipes and laptop. I've had hard shell suitcases come out of the luggage collector with bloody holes in them. I am so not putting any pipe in there !
And TSA is not an issue. Pipes, tobaccos, tamper, Bic lighter, Czech tool, cleaners, all goes in the carry on without issue. I think I had maybe two or three times in the last year that they checked what it actually was. I tend to not take Zippo's or torch lighters.

wow I'm surprised such things pass through TSA so easily. They must be finally relaxing their stringent rules.

I would use something like this (Silver Bullet Aluminum Pistol Case). Found it on Amazon for $22 ($9 shipping).

That's pretty nice. I think before I purchase online I will look and see what they have locally. Might be able to save on the shipping.

Photo man: they're usually ok, with the occasional bad tempered person.. Search the forum a bit, there's been several threads on traveling with pipes.
Basically it all comes down to this: be prepared, take off shoes, belt, change out of your pockets, phone, wallet, all that stuff. It goes either in your carry-on or in a little tray. Don't put bottles of water or large bottles of shower gel and stuff in your carry-on either. Make sure you know the rules. There are no rules against taking on cigarettes or tobacco products, including pipes. So they usually don't object to those. The couple of times I was asked whether they could check the bag was because of tins of tobacco. Although I usually have a couple in my bag without issues. They just looked at them, asked what they were, saw there was more pipe tobacco and let me go with it. Once one guy asked if he could pop an unopened tin of 7 year old C&D Repose I had found on a back shelf at a local B&M. I patiently explained I'd rather not and explained the aging of tobacco. He became very interested and let me carry it on without opening it. It's still in my cellar ;-)
You make their life easier, they won't hassle you.

Mick,

I have no personal experience because I've never flown. It is good to know that they don't care about tobacco. So far it has always been cheaper to drive. For now I would just like a case I can throw in the bottom of my suitcase in the car for those long rides.

Thanks storient but you have been too generous already. I think I have something that will work with a little tweaking and if not I'm sure I will find something at the store.

putting a hard case in a suitcase that look's like a gun case may not go over real good. I would just get a nice carry-on and keep them with me. maybe slip each in a bubble wrap bag for travel. I never put anything I want to see again in checked baggage.
I use one of these for carry on and get pipes, tobacco, cigars, netbook, camera, glasses, shaving gear and a pair of shorts, pair of chinos. a polo and a t-shirt. in case my checked bag get's lost. as mentioned don't do anything to attract attention.. smile, take of your shoes, skip the belt, have everything out of your pockets in the tray. I've never been looked at twice.

I put my four pipes in a 3 pipe Peterson travel case and they go in my briefcase as a carry-on for flying. The Pete case is actually very well padded. Same for driving. I don't like putting my tobacco in the trunk, if it is hot, it gets roasted. The single-pistol cases from Amazon look the way to go for protection and low-cost. There are probably used ones on Ebay. First search result was this one for $13 delivered. Seems to fit the bill:

Quite a few Plano hardcases, most under $20 shipped. Plano is a great name in fishing tackle boxes, sure to be built sturdily.

Since we're at it ;-)

My carry-on: Swiss Army computer smart-scan backpack. The "Smart-scan" is a zipper that goes around and the backflap folds out the rear laptop pocket. No need to take the laptop out of the bag. It just folds open and has a mesh cover so they can see what's in it. It's TSA approved and works real well.

For the pipes, a simple Castleford four-pipe bag.

My cigar box case is the same concept as a gun case... I have to get a little latch to hold it shut for travel. It was just a spur of the moment thing for me and my boys to have fun with. A gun case would be ideal!!!
