I recall when I was in my 30s, just when I began to experience hangovers, the older fellow drunks would tell me they only get worse... more than anything, I’ve found them to get different, while I might describe them as worse. Pounding headaches, I mostly avoid with knowing how to drink. The last 6 month since or so I have been experiencing more anxiety / dread related effects of over doing it, often waking up at 5am with some sinking feeling.

How many replies will it take for some heavy bourbon drinker to chime in that they’ve never had a hangover and their body would shut down without that lube? I say, three.

I've moderated my alcohol intake as I've gotten older (mid-30's now), mainly just because I've become more aware of the long term health risks involved. I usually keep it in the "low risk" threshold based on the current medical standards.

That said, I still have the occasional unmoderated Friday or Saturday night, which sometimes of course leads to a hangover the following morning. I've found that drinking plenty of water (in between alcoholic beverages) makes a HUGE difference for me regarding hangover potential. I also will chug a bottle of Gatorade or other electrolyte sports drink to replace lost nutrients if I think I've been drinking excessively.

In my mid 40s I can confirm that hangovers are worse now than they used to be. Nowadays I limit my drinking because I know I'll need to pay the price tomorrow. Hangovers happen even when I don't feel tipsy or dunk. A hangover isn't nice for me and it is unfair to my family (young children that need my energy and attention). Your mileage may vary, as they say. I'm okay with about 3 drinks. Anything beyond that is some degree of hangover the following day. It is also disruptive to my sleep. When I was younger I would sometimes drink until morning, sleep an hour or two, and be fully functional to get work done. Those days are long gone. I still like to have a bit too much on occasion, but those occasions are rare and planned for.

All sounds about right. I use to be better about drinking a glass of water between every drink, got lazy somehow. Wasting an entire day because you’re in the malaise of a hangover certainly is a deterrent from over doing it but humans often have short memories. Also, the older I get the more I appreciate mornings.

Well I will be the 4th. I am a very heavy drinker, bourbon whiskey and some beer. I have had hangovers but not in several years. That being said different alcohols affect me differently. Rum is a bad one for me the next morning i am sluggish. Bourbon is usually just cotton mouth. But i dont get headaches or anything. Hangovers are real and I am not super drinker. But you do get a tolerance for it

Agreed. I've even gotten to the point where I love waking up early on the weekends just because it makes the day feel longer

I'm also into paddle sports (just recreational canoeing and kayaking with the occasional whitewater river for good measure) which is often an all-day affair, so waking up early and feeling good is very worthwhile. I also agree with what @seldom said about his duty to his family, though my wife and I haven't had any kids just yet.

My recreations are long gone. Replaced with 3 daughters and a wife and honey do list. And the home upkeep. I am not complaining just saying enjoy your time with what you do. I wake up early on the weekends just for some relaxation of a pipe and coffee

Havent touched vodka in about 15 years. The outcome is never good. I think sugar might be what gets alot of people in trouble with drinking.

I think it’s also a matter of knowing one’s body, vodka use to be what I could drink all night and yet function the next day. I’ve read studies that discount the idea of different types of drunk on different spirits but trust my personal experience over some yahoo news blurb.

Yea, being around someone with a hangover isn’t pleasant. I would also say driving with a hangover is rather dangerous.
