hi Folks;
I know I'm pretty late to the party but wanted to post some impressions of Halfling's Leaf as well. Let me start out by saying that until I started reading some of the reviews here I really didn't approach my new tobacco's analytically. It usually came down to a much more pedestrian reaction of: did I enjoy the smoke and would I want to smoke it again. Obviously I have a lot to learn and I ask you to bear with me. I think educating an uneducated palate takes a little development. But I'm enjoying the challenge.
Having first read Baron Samedi's review I had some things to look for... and that definitely helped.
I've smoked three bowls of Halfling's Leaf this week. The chocolate, berry, and honey notes I smelled in the bag came through from the first light down to the end of the bowl. I could still sense that chocolate taste at the end of the bowl. I found the Leaf to be a very even and cool smoking blend with no tongue bite at all. It did not require multiple relights and produced an even ash. The smoke itself was rich and swirled nicely. Two of the bowls were outside on the deck and one in my garage. Inside I found it much easier to detect the room note and identify the various components.
Back to my old school basics approach -- I enjoyed the smoke very much. I can easily see this being a great evening nightcap, but can also envision it thru the day. As I said earlier I don't have a very educated palate but I could tell the underlying tobacco can stand on it's own. The blended flavors merely add to the good taste.
Let me also add that I live fairly close to pipeinhand -- hadn't realized that initially -- and he was gracious enough to meet me somewhere local to deliver the order. This gave me an opportunity to meet him, talk about his blends, and get a sense of his approach to putting these together. I found him to be very knowledgeable and articulate and passionate about his work. I always like to see that in any craftsman. HE was thankfully willing to share his experience and I walked away a little better educated than I had been before the meet.
The quality of the blend and the genuineness of the blender will certainly have me reordering.
I hope some of this is helpful,
Patrick
