The softer mouthfeel is due to the fact that it's nitrogenated, not carbonated, and the resulting tiny bubbles. Hence the widget. There are a few other brands that use a similar method.

If you enjoy Guinness, left hand brewing's nitro milk stout may be to your liking as well. Firestone Walker makes a nitro stout as well.

I usually prefer coffee with my smoke, but any beer or whiskey will do as well. I have found that I do enjoy darker beers with tobacco in general though.
That’s why I can drink it. The carbonation in beer fucks with my sinuses. Probably blew them out with a beer bong or something.

During the last year I’ve had to resort to Guinness in a can. It’ll do in a pinch but nothing can ever replace the perfectly poured Guinness you get in Irish pubs. Even most of the ones here in Scotland are a pale comparison.

Guinness in a can is currently harder to find in NZ than pipe tobacco.

Question where is Guinness brewed in the southern Hemisphere?
Years ago Guinness was brewed at Park Royal in London for the UK market IMHO not as good as Dublin Guinness. Dublin Guinness could be had at proper Irish pubs across London. Now all Guinness drunk on tap and in cans in the UK is brewed at the James Gate brewery Dublin after Park Royal shut.
All Guinness in Europe is also brewed there. In the North of Tenerife fifty miles off the coast of Africa I frequent an Irish folk club the Guinness barrels have Dublin James Gate brewery stamped on them.So they ship it direct from Dublin to Santa Cruz so it must also be shipped to Africa and South America. Although there is a large Guinness brewery in Nigeria.I believe all Guinness in North America is brewed in Canada. But Iam sure in New York, and Boston, Dublin brewed Guinness can be found.

The canned version (with widget) comes from Ireland. We can still get the bottled stuff, which is sent as a powder and brewed here in NZ. I’m pretty sure the draught you get on tap is brewed here to. In fact a lot of foreign beers are brewed domestically, and it is sometimes possible to purchase both the imported (well exported I guess) version and the nz finished one to compare. The results vary.

When there was a big earthquake in NZ a decade back it interrupted the local brewing of Guinness and a few other European beers.

This is a pint of English stout hand pulled no gas from a local brewery called Jack Rabbit. The stouts called Down the rabbit hole.I remember it well I drank this last year during a pause in the lockdown on a outside table at one of my favourite pubs.Smoked a bowl of Rimboche SJ went well together.Pubs and restaurant’s in the Uk have been closed since the 16th December and not due to open until the 12th April. When there will be many a pint drunk throughout the land.Outside of course .View attachment 72501
That does look like a good pint. Cannot wait to get one at a pub again. It’s the 26th April up here before we can.

There are a lot of very good stouts across the UK. I suppose Guinness is just the more recognised brand. Partial to a Porter as well.

UK has wonderful ales. And the pubs with beer engine. I could die there. Was in London couple of decades ago. Went to a pub and another one and another. Just amazing experience.

Definitely been a big resurgence of smaller craft breweries, but also craft brewing pubs.

We have a great wee place nearby where you can watch them brew in tiny vats whilst you have a pint of their beer.

The proper British (with each country within its variations) are a cracking thing. A lot of horrible chain ones but they can be easily avoided.

I'm not generally particular about what I drink when I smoke. I'm only an occasional consumer of hot beverages, so I rarely drink those while I smoke. My most common pairing is heavily watered down (10:1 ish) limeade or lemonade. But I love beer, and will drink whatever beer sounds good to me in the moment without much thought to the tobacco I'll be smoking. I have found, however, that Guinness seems to go well with almost any tobacco, particularly with burley blends. For example, one of the exceptions to my first statement is that Guinness is very much preferred beverage pairing with HH Burley Flake; they should do some crossover marketing.

I think that has a lot to do with the flavor profile of both, but I also think that the nitro pour (at home I always drink Guinness Draft from the widget cans) is so much softer on the tongue than typical carbonation. If I'm drinking something conventionally carbonated while smoking a zippy Virginia, the carbonation can be a little irritating on the tongue. I'll have to try some Boddington's or even a can of cold nitro poured coffee with a smoke sometime.

The reason Guinness is so good with tobacco is because it’s a gutless, flavorless beer. True, it has a substantial malt backbone, but it’s missing a tremendous amount of hops needed for balance. Fair play as that fits the guidelines of the style, a BJCP acknowledgement about which they had zero concern at the outset. However, I truly think the reason it pairs well with so many tobaccos is because it embodies a profound nothingness.

Let me take a guess. You are a hophead and love American microbrew, specially IPA.

I hadn't heard the label "hophead" before.

I like a variety of beer types just like some of the members here have several varieties of tobaccos.

When I was in my late 20's and had just been hired for a new job, I was introduced to the CEO at a bar in New Jersey. He had just ordered a beer. It looked like used diesel motor oil. I asked him what kind of beer it was and he said Guinness Stout. I had only drank American brands before. He offered to order one for me and I curiously accepted the offer. My beer preference suddenly changed. Thank you Mr. McMurtry. :)

Beer festivals have helped in this process. I volunteer at Beer festivals throughout the summer. The last one 2019 in Cambridge on Jesus Green sold a 100,000 pints of draught real ale in four days most came from small craft breweries including Scotland. Just under 50000 went through the Marquee doors. This happens up and down the country.

Yes there are a few of them round here. Always a fun day/night out and always something for everyones tastes. A lot safer than a whisky festival as well!
I have been to a Rum trade festival inside Earls court in January they turn the heating up to create the caribbean vibe. One price entry and the Rum is free. Its only when you step outside into -4 that you realise that you are fucked.

I wish beer clicked with me and the pipe. I just get too tired after. I've found this chamomile that's honey vanilla that pairs well with my smokes.

Have you ever tried the Extra Stout? It's very different than the draft, more alcohol, more hops and is the original recipe that's been brewed since the mid 1800's.

Guinness (draft or Extra Stout) is one of a couple of OG beers (the other being Pilsner Urquell) that just don’t need justification, so no need for me to make the case that so many millions have since 1759. Sure, it may not appeal to everyone, but to suggest there’s something so profoundly amiss with Guinness as to be “gutless” is just fucking absurd.

I’m not saying it needs justification, I’m just saying it doesn’t offer a lot except a malt note and, therefore, pairs well with almost anything. Nothing is amiss, like I said, it nails what it’s supposed to be. It’s just that what it is isn’t much more than simplicity. I’m not even saying I don’t like it. I’m sure I’ve had untold gallons of it throughout the years, and it does what it does well, it’s just gutless.

Nope. I love all beer. Only a handful I don’t particularly care for. I thoroughly enjoy stouts, particularly imperials and Russian imperials. Porters, barley wines, ESB’s, lagers, ambers, IPA’s, etc. I like them all. Just don’t think Guinness has a lot going for it. It’s not a bad beer, I just think it’s relatively plain.

Guinness has different tastes in different places in the world. This is intentional on the part of Guinness speaking to the good stuff. The black stuff on tap.

I can't really speak to the canned and bottled stuff. I'm guessing some might consider it bland as it's pretty much "one size fits all" stuff. But, I drink it almost exclusively when wanting a beer no matter what part of the globe i'm on.
