Hello, I just wanted to quickly introduce myself and ask what would be a good english blend for a beginner. I just got my first pipe for Christmas and have been enjoying Boswells raspberry cream immensely. I keep hearing about english blends and am well aware its quite different from aromatics but would love to try one out. I keep hearing good things about Boswells northwoods but I dont want to get ahead of myself and be turned off of english blends. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I, too, am from Chicago, North Side.
I don't know if you are aware of the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club. We get together on a regular basis. It's a good way to meet other smokers and share tobaccos and information. Here is a link to the website:

Chevronpiper:

Your question is making me nostalgic for the old Tinder Box stores…where you could pretty much walk into any mall and sample a bowlful of one of their “house” blends. Because now…well, you could easily get several dozen recommendations for a light, “beginner’s” English blend here, which might not be much help at all.

Having said that: Arguably the most distinctive difference between English and aromatic blends is the presence of latakia in English blends. (They can also be much more flavorful than aromatics, since the focus is on the tobaccos and not on creating a pleasant aroma for passersby.)

At the risk of playing it really safe, I’d suggest maybe starting with Boswell’s “Mild English,” since you’ve enjoyed at least one other of their blends. Now, I will say that this is not what I would call a “standard” English—others here may argue with me—because it contains both burley and cavendish. So you’ll get to see how you feel about latakia, but it won’t give you the full English-tobacco experience, in my opinion. (FYI: I define a standard English as consisting of Virginia, orientals, and latakia. Period.)

OTOH, if you’re willing to purchase a tin, I don’t think you could go wrong with Peterson’s Standard Mixture. The name pretty much says it all. (It used to be sold as Dunhill’s Standard Mixture.) I would also recommend GL Pease’s Westminster, which is a full English; it might be a lot more than you’re looking for at the moment…or it might be life-changing.

I’m eager to see what others here recommend.

And, yes, welcome from a former Chicagolander (Downers Grove/Elgin) and current Michigander!

Hello and thank you for the recommendations! Boswells Mild English sounds like just what im looking for. Something reminiscent of an english blend but not something thats going to be too much for me to handle as I am new to smoking tobacco of any kind. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to help a newbie.

Welcome sir! You cannot go wrong with Boswells IMO. I love doing business with such a great family run company.

Lots of good advice on here already. I like Boswells Countryside too.
Happy new year!
Thank you! Thats what drew me to Boswells. That it is a legitimate family run company. I will definitely look into Boswells countyside. Thanks for the recommendation

Hello, Chevronpiper. Welcome!

Being in the Chicago area, I might suggest a trip to Iwan Ries, on Wabash, right under the Loop. It has been several years since I have been there, but smoking was allowed inside the shop, and if memory serves correctly, you could ask for a sample, and smoke it there.
