Hello and welcome from Orcas, WA! I love English and balkan/ish blends heavy on Latakia. Don't be afraid of the Northwoods - it is very mild, imho. The 'campfire' smell you get from the bag turns into wonderfully smooth richness when smoking. Some english (and burley, etc) blends are more potent than others. Look for a 'lighter' nic-hit blend if you are not sure how much nicotine you are ready for. Tobaccoreviews.com is a great resource - look up all the blends mentioned for some good reading! I second the suggestion for My Mixture 965 (Sutliff match version). Also consider Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend for an easy and world famous blend. Another easy favorite (not an English) I have to recommend: Arrowhead from Paul's Pipe Shop.

Chevron', didn't mean to mislead you. The Park Ridge Pipe Shop thrived as a local institution for about twenty years, ending up a meeting place for counter culture kids in the 70's through the 90's, long after I'd grown up and left town, except for family visits. But they are long long gone by now, and I think it is now a real estate office or something similar.

I can say that Boswell's Northwoods is a good beginner blend. Give GL Pease Chelsea Morning a try too. I smoke it with my coffee in the morning and it's great. I'm also a beginner and have so far liked these two blends. Also, welcome from Toronto, Canada!!!

For an intro to English blends I would recommend Peterson (formerly dunhill) early morning pipe. It’s an excellent light English that also gives you a little taste for virginias.
