Like many others, I prefer classic shapes, but would buy whatever catches my eye.

I'm more particular about bowl size and about ability to pass a cleaner. I prefer medium sized bowls , and for pipes I dedicate to Virginias and Va/pers I prefer the bowls to be taller and slimmer.

I have pipes of all different shapes, but there is one constant and that is that all (bar one) have saddle stems. I’ve just never been drawn to tapered stems.

I never purchased "whatever I could afford." A pipe needs to catch my eye hanging on the wall or in a display case. All of my pipes are bent to one degree or another but, the bowl shapes run the gamut of classical. But, buying a pipe simply because I could afford it? Nah!
Oh, to clarify. I choose what I like but some shapes that I’d like are out of my price range.

I’ve found bowl size to be important too. With English a wider and shallow bowl is what I prefer but same as you for VA.

I've heard claims of chamber size and shape affecting a blend, but never the bowl.

For me I think though who knows, the shallow aspect keeps the cut of those blends lit better therefore cooler and therefore tastier.

Tomato, prince, billiard, and dublin make up most of my collection. Other than that it's an eclectic mix of some pretty weird shit. Briar Calabash, volcano, 904s, freehands, etc.

I am a fan of the churchwarden as well though. I have probably 10, my favorites of which are my Vauen Auenland Eron and my Kaywoodie relief grain poker CW.

Probably the chamber, which is usually- but not always— a function of the size of the bowl. I know I sometimes use bowl when I mean chamber, but hopefully only when the context makes it clear.

I tend to like pipes with wide bowls, so that tends to come with a big chamber. But I do think the narrower chamber with beefy walls is an attractive look.

I only buy pipes that have two holes. I'm very picky that way.
So five's out of the question?

I can't even imagine the tongue bite on that thing. Is your tongue made of leather at this point?
One I never had the pleasure of owning though a number of Holm's pieces have been in and out of my hands. As for the leather tongue, not sure. Thirty years of smoking has likely made it that way.
